I announced that Devon was scheduled to take an oral test, and surprisingly, she agreed! The test comprised 25 questions on the things we had been discussing - Devon did very well. After the test we watched a video on the nervous system that addressed some questions she had proposed during the test.
Extra Practice: Review and exercise of previous lessons. Devon did a great job working independently. She got most problems correct with very little assistance.
Devon did not address the images we had started working with, as was her homework. So this session, we completed her image organization. We discussed the reasons why one would be best served if they did this organizational practice soon after taking the photos. Devon was amazed how she could not remember the names of some girls she knew at camp. When we had done all that we could, we turned our attention to planning her powerpoint assignment. We decided to make the program around a chronological presentation of her photos, with some additional images from the camp website, to illustrate activities that she could not have her camera, or take photos. We started the powerpoint by selecting a format for the title page. She came up with a title just as our hour came to an end.
This session was dedicated to investigating the structure of the ear and the eye. I had Devon draw an ear, with the canal, the drum, hammer, anvil, stirrup and cochlea. While she drew each structure, we discussed how sound waves travel into the ear, and strike the drum, which moves the hammer to hit the anvil, that moves the stirrup, that in turn vibrates hairs inside the cochlea. We watched a video that illustrated how this process works, and several videos of individuals that were able to hear for the first time, after getting a cochlea implant. We then examined the parts of the eye, and how light waves enter into the eye, and stimulates the rods and cones. Devon was interested and asked many insightful questions (no pun intended).
Extra Practice: Devon is doing an excellent job working independently after instruction. She is getting all problems correct and asking great questions, showing understanding concept.

Reading - Read/discuss orally "All Summer in a Day" by Ray Bradbury. Review characteristics of science fiction (a fictional story usually in the future involving science or technology). Devon and I took turns reading the story orally…it was sad. Devon has empathy for others…she's a really sweet girl and I enjoy working with her.
