We had a good guided discussion of “Babylon Revisited” and how we both felt about the events and the ending.
This was an enlightening class. We talked about F. Scott and his life and how it reflected in his writing, about Hemingway and Gertrude Stein and their relationships. We both appreciated the writing of F. Scott and how he got it right. Mary has very good insight into literature. She compared the flawless writing of Fitzgerald to a short story by Balzac which lacked a little something.
I read parts of a peer reviewed article on “Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and Babylon Revisited” and “ Babylon Revisited Symbolism, Imagery and Allegory.”
I ended by noting once again that it helps to read peer reviewed articles but that the voice of the student’s interpretation and thoughts should always come through in a literature class.
Short story review and organizing for absences next week.
Assignment
Answer prompts of her choice from my list of for “Babylon Revisited” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I want at least ¾ page with MLA formatting. Write an essay from the two analyses I provided including themes, type of work, characters, nonverbal communication, etc. for “The Rocking Horse Winner” by D. H. Lawrence. She may choose any topics of her choice that interest her. I told her that she hasn’t been writing and it is time to write again. Read short stories assigned in order. She made herself a folder and looked organized which was nice to see…we’ll see. She said she will check her E-mails from me so that I can send her assignments for the reading…this again was a good sign.

Mary finally told me ahead of time that she would be out for next week so that I could organize her reading and assignments while gone. So together we chose stories that she has already read and should read over the following week.
I read part of a peer reviewed article on Balzac that I printed up. I also read a literary criticism of a peer reviewed article on “Babylon Revisited” which I didn’t get to read yesterday.
We talked about the short story she recommended for me to read “The Yellow Wallpaper.” I asked her to provide her analysis first which she had more of a connection with and deeper insight. I am not always the teacher…sometimes they are.
We then had a discusssion about “The Rocking Horse Winner.” She read out loud the themes, climax, tragic irony and nonverbal communication analysis I printed out with guided discussion.
- final rewrite of research paper: "Regime Change in Autocracies"
- develop thesis for the next research paper.
