Character traits and motivation, self-monitoring for comprehension
Lesson Outline
Today's lesson plan included reading standard RL1.3 which asks readers to describe characters in a story and explain how their actions contribute to a sequence of events. This standard includes character traits, motivations and/or feelings. In addition, we would have continued our focus on self-monitoring for comprehension.

Xavier had trouble getting started and didn't want to practice spelling. I didn't do as much on that as I wanted. He did very well on math when I wrote the numbers in columns so that he could keep them straight.
How key details support the central message of a story
Lesson Outline
Dillon had a great session today! He started with an oral fluency passage and scored within the 3rd grade limits. It was a "how to" passage, so we reviewed the transitional words that are used for writing a how to paragraph. Dillon retold the steps accurately. Next, Dillon completed the comprehension questions for the "Grasshopper and the Ant" story. He then read a Greek myth, "The Story of Icarus". Dillon did an excellent job determining the central message of this text. He provided key details to support his answers. Dillon worked carefully and thoughtfully throughout our session!

Lesson Comments
Nicholas was very cooperative as long as he was allowed to roll around on the floor. His mother seemed surprised by the school report that he is behind in everything. I took Nicholas to work with him and didn't respond when she said that. I would have to support the school that he is behind even though we know he has been making progress.
