Today Ethan continued to read aloud to me. We are still reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid. He likes reading these books and he will read them aloud to me so that is why I have stuck with this series. I am trying to get him to think ahead to what may happen in the story and to look at theme and main idea.

Ethan does't really like to read. I like him to read aloud to me so I can see which words he is getting. He is improving a little bit but not as much as he could. I am thinking that while he is away (I'm not sure when his family go away with their father) it would be wonderful if we could somehow continue to read aloud with him. Perhaps in the future he will choose to read more at home and this will help him to improve his reading.

Today Ben and I started to read the book Dino-Mike. As I was reading the book I was stopping to show Ben signs to certain words. Some of the signs were dinosaur, tree, forest and sleep. We reviewed the sign for thank-you, Mom and I LOVE YOU.

Lesson Outline
Today the plan was for Ben to continue to learn animal signs. He seems to be better if we watch a DVD 1st and then try to practice the signs. I also showed him signs that were painted by a famous Deaf artist. We then began to read a book about Polar Bears and Grizzly Bears. (I tried to incorporate sign with this book)

Ben really is fighting me with learning sign language. I can barely get him to do a few signs... not for lack of trying. He will watch the videos and try a few signs but if I ask him to make the signs he gets upset and refuses. I then turn to reading... trying to get him to predict the outcome of the story and talk a little about the main idea.

It is hard to find things that Ethan will read and pay attention to. I am trying to do a viariety of things with him. On THursdays we only have 30 minutes together but it is hard to keep his attention for this amount of time. I will try to change things up to play educational games and some other activities.

Today Charlie and I started reading the book "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" by Kate DiCamillo. We discussed the cover and read the book's summary. We then discussed what he thought the book would be about, what kind of journey he might be undertaking, what miraculous means and what was happening on the cover. He seems to enjoy the book and the discussions.

Ethan and Stephen have been asking to do a class together for a long time. Stephen has Language Arts the same time that Ethan and I meet. So today was the designated day! Ms. Evie planned a very good spelling game around the words that they are learning with her. It was a fun game and they played it well together. Then they chose a vocabulary game to play which had some tough words in it. They learned a few new vocabulary words today that they were able to choose out of context...

Evie has both Ethan and Stephen as students (and Stephen twice on Mondays). The boys have been asking for months if they could play educations games during this time period. We promised that "sometime" after the holiday they could. Today was that day and it went pretty well. Sometimes some silliness but mostly they concentrated on spelling and vocabulary words.It was an experiment that we may allow once in a blue moon.(but worked well)

Today as the substitute for Yanuell it was decided to let him choose a book to read together and discuss the details. We continued a Magic Tree house book he is reading but switched to a story with a Slug in it. He was unsure of what a slug looked like so we started to do research on slugs. We found many amazing images of slugs and interesting facts. We looked up slugs that live in Florida and slugs that live in Puerto Rico. Yanuell also wanted to see who their predators were, come to find out there were many. We even found a very interesting video on the slime of the slug in Puerto Rico

Ben and I started reading a book regarding different types of bears. This particular book gives many facts about bears in regard to their habits. I tried to incorporate these facts into things he may already know about bears. For the last 5 minutes of class Ben chose a fun book to look at and I read to him. We started to discuss the characters and the main idea of the short story.
