Brandon and I completed the case study reading. Next, we created an outline of his evaluation for the assignment. Lastly, Brandon began the first draft of the case study analysis.
Brandon and I read the feedback from the OWL writing lab on his Memo draft. We then brainstormed some changes to make and Brandon added them. Next, we began reading a company ethics case study to prepare for his next assignment.
For Gwendolyn's Writing Enrichment, we continued our study of poetry. We read a Shel Silverstein book, "A Giraffe and a Half" and we read numerous funny poems written by Jack Pretlutsky. We wrote our own poem from a Jack Pretlutsky poem starter, and we talked about different forms of poetry. We plan on writing poems about Steph Curry to send to him as fan mail.
Baylie and I continued working on her research writing assignment from Friday. On Friday, she found two excellent websites full of information, she completed the "hamburger outline" that will help her organize her paper, and she wrote her introduction and first body paragraphs. Today, Baylie and I used the same websites to write the last three paragraphs. These paragraphs consist of the second body paragraph, third body paragraph, and the conclusion paragraph. I told Baylie that she will write her final draft one day this week.
Today Kayla and I took a detailed look at parts of her essay as she completed revisions. She researched and we completed MLA formatting revisions in Microsoft Word on the MAC. As we read sentence by sentence, we discussed strategies for writing improvement: how to reorder phrases within sentences for clarity of thought, how to select words for specificity of meaning, combining and breaking apart sentences for clarity, and moving thoughts, ideas, and sentences to other sections, and improving flow by reading sentences out loud. Attending to the details in the revision process is exceptionally important to improve clarity of thought and expression. We also added these steps to her personal revision practices list.
Today Kayla completed a spelling lesson for words which create pronunciation difficulties. She also completed a summation exercise proofreading a passage for specific words. We then read the Purdue Owl revisions document to help her understand the steps of the revision process. We each independently proofread her essay on Overcoming Fatigue. Using our revisions and the Purdue Owl document, we compiled a list of specific revision steps she must attend to for her writing. I also shared my own list specific to my writing needs. For the remainder of the session, Kayla used the thesaurus to select synonyms for words she overused in the essay. In doing so she was able to improve the flow and sound of her essay.
