Explore the strength of the parts of a magnet through investigation. Identify the parts of a magnet. Describe what the poles of a magnet do when placed together.
Activity: where on a bar magnet is the pull strongest?
Patrick and I read a book about Cinco de Mayo, then watched the Ballet Folklorico de Mexico dancing traditional dances. We talked about the kinds of foods that might be eaten on Cinco de Mayo. We spent some time with maps and the globe to locate north and south america, Mexico, and the United States.
Today Patrick discovered how using pictures to solve word problems also can help with reading or making a data table. Patrick analyzed data tables to find a number pattern, thus the rule for the table. Once finding the rule (using math pictures when needed) Patrick also completed various data tables.
Patrick and I began reading with a game I developed specifically to help him with his decoding and word pattern skills. On a blank 6-sided cube I wrote familiar word endings from his previous repeated readings (-ug, -ig, -an, -ab, etc.). To play each player rolls the word ending cube and then a number die. Whatever the number rolled is the amount of words that player has to write with the word ending rolled (like a word family or word ladder). The first player to write 20 words wins. He really seemed to enjoy the game! Next, I previewed a few words from his new repeated reading passage. He decoded small and away. Then we discussed how even though both of those have little words within the big word only one is a compound word. He determined that away was the compound word. Next, he set a goal for himself in reading (0 mistakes in 6 or less reads). He accomplished his goal in the first read!!! He read the passage with 0 errors and 3 self-corrections. Patrick is improving his monitoring during the repeated readings. Lastly, we read chorally read the next chapter of his book from home.

Now that his confidence is starting to improve with word recognition I would like to focus on speed. Before we move on to a new passage I will see if he is ready to be timed. Patrick talked to me about having to move today. He also said that he really wishes he could stay at Juno Beach Prep. Sounds like he is going through some serious changes at home.
Explore and draw a conclusion about the kinds of things that will move to a magnet. Recognize that magnets attracts things that have iron in them. Describe similarities and differences between magnets.
Patrick completed his daily protocol in his FF program. He created 3 new high scores in Ant Antics, Fish Frenzy, and Magic Bird. In LB, Patrick completed the last page of higher order thinking questions from his activity book, pertaining to the story entitled Frog Meal. Then he read, with some support, the next passage called The Long Jump. Patrick read the vocabulary list that belongs to the story. We discussed and gave a sentence for each word. Patrick was able to create his own picture from the first sentence of the story. He chose the correct answers to the Picture This section. Great work!
Patrick continued to work on a writing piece. He used his structure words in order to provide adjectives. He is doing very well. I emphasize to him that he can use LB for reading, writing, and listening. Patrick visualized himself hiding in an old broken down helicopter, while players hurried past him. Great work. Have a super weekend.
