Lesson Outline
Patrick completed three games in Fast ForWord where he practiced the following: Sorting pictures or written words by first, last or middle sound; choosing the correct letter to change one word into another; finding the written word that matches the spoken word. Through these games he improved his skills in: phonemic awareness, letter-sound correspondence, spelling, decoding skills, sight word recognition, and left-to-right visual tracking.
Patrick worked with a peer at school to create a boat. He verbalized the steps he took in order to begin his craft. During the process Patrick was able to recall his structure words to tell how he was building it and to describe the tools/supplies necessary. It was a fun session.
Today I read to Patrick from Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Then we discussed main idea and details. To have fun with the concept we played Headbandz. This allowed Patrick to see a main idea (secret card) and generate supporting details specific enough for me to determine the card (main idea). We took turns and had a lot of fun with it! Then Patrick chose his favorite secret card and generated a main idea sentence and 3 supporting details. His ideas were great, but he needs to work on translating his ideas in writing. We spent a lot of time actually writing the sentences he easily generated orally. Then Patrick read Level E Clouds. His reading was a bit labored today.

Lesson Comments
I am a bit concerned by the discrepancy between Patrick's reading and writing abilities. Based on his work today, I was surprised to see little to no application of reading strategies in his writing. He did not attempt to decode written words to spell like he does to read.
Today Patrick and I played Coin Tic-Tac-Toe. In this game you must match a value to a coin. Patrick really enjoyed it. It is helping him with coin recognition. Next we practiced counting mixed change. I modeled classifying mixed change by coin, starting with the largest value and then adding on. He did well with this. I gave him a hundred's chart to refer to, which seemed to give him the confidence he needed:) He is fluent counting by 1's, 10's and 5's, so I know it will just be a matter of time before he is fluent counting mixed change:)
