"oye al desierto". We read about the desert and learned words associated with it: dry, hot, cactus, coyote, sand, wind, etc. We went outside and picked prickly pears
Patrick worked on determining a main idea from related details. He did well with this in isolation. On Wednesday we will apply this concept to text. Then Patrick read Nate the Snake is Late from the Wonders anthology. He began very labored and choppy, but improved his fluency toward the end. He is great at using picture clues to help with unknown words, but needs to work on reading the entire word instead of just relying on the picture clues. Then I helped Patrick prewrite details for a personal narrative. Today he generated the topic and details, while I wrote them down.
Today I introduced coin identification, value and basic coin counting. Patrick immediately identified the penny and knew its value. He has not yet mastered the other coins, but I am sure he will by the end of the week. We also worked on counting by 5s and 10s. Patrick did well with his 10s and was motivated to count well past 100. He did good with the 5s, but will need a little more practice:) We will continue with skip counting and counting mixed change over the next few weeks.
Chapter 10, changes in matter. Go over the question on page E52 and E 53. Review the vocabulary : float, melt, freeze, sink, mixture.
Extra activity: solid changes into liquid/ heating sugar.
Patrick did a wonderful job today in FF. He beat his highest score in Buzz Fly. This is a listening comprehension program. He is able to listen and read simultaneously to short ongoing passages. He was able to use the skills he has learned from his L-B program, as many of the answer choices from the comprehension questions were formatted using pictures. In LB, Patrick and I discussed some different possibilities (seeds) for him to write about. He shared some memorable moments, possible inventions, and places he would like to visit. I think he came to a decision to write about Six Flags in NJ. He has not decided what kind of story he would like to write yet. Maybe fiction?
Today Patrick worked in his activity book for LB. He worked on a passage that he reread and answered questions which demonstrated his understanding. Patrick was able to express in words, the gestalt/main idea and complete a cloze passage with the correct vocabulary words. He answered critical thinking questions which pertained to the story, as well. In FF, Patrick played three brain games today. These games require him to identify beginning sounds and determine the correct vowel sounds. Patrick is also working on games which help improve his memory recall. He did a great job this week. Patrick had some extra time where he played a few typing games which will help increase his speed. Have a great weekend!
Patrick and I reviewed for his test and then he took the test independently. I corrected it with him. Patrick only missed 1 question scoring a 96%!!! I am so proud of his progress!
Today I introduced the 7 continents with a BrainPop video. Then Patrick played a fun continent game on the computer. I was very impressed with how fast Patrick recognized and distinguished between the 7 land masses. Lastly, Patrick matched the names to the continents. He recognized that my name is found Australia and that seemed to help him a lot:) I was also surprised that he remembered 3 of the 5 oceans with no review (Atlantic, Indian and Arctic Oceans)!
