Today I administered a Level E running record with Patrick. He scored 100% on comprehension. His fluency was weak (very labored) today (I think partly because he did not like the book). He scored an 87%. I will reassess Patrick in a month. I read from Diary of A Wimpy Kid. Patrick was a vey attentive listener:)
Explore and draw conclusion about what happens to ice aced in a warm place and a cool place. Explain what happens to matter when heat is gained or lost. Activities on page E 45. Developing vocabulary : melting and freezing. Go over questions on page E49.
I read aloud from Diary of a a Wimpy Kid. Patrick and I both made personal connections throughout the read aloud. Then Patrick and I went to the computer lab to choose a new story from A to Z Reading.com. He wanted to participate in choosing his book, which is an excellent skill to develop at a young age. It also gives ownership in reading and learning. Patrick chose a book for school and a book for home. At school he read Level E The Vet. He read mostly fluent and demonstrated comprehension and curiosity. Each page discussed an animal that was hurt and Patrick asked how it happened. After reading Patrick and I added a sentence to explain how it may have happened. This was perfect to encourage Patrick to write while working on the cause and effect comprehension strategy.

Patrick almost completely shutdown when we discussed writing today. He kept telling me over and over that he didn't want to write. I gave him some time alone (I went to the bathroom) he came looking for me and seemed a bit better. We ended up adding sentences to the book he read aloud and he successfully turned his attitude around:) His reading continues to improve.
Today Patrick started a new book in his Lindamood-Bell program. It is formatted in the same way. Patrick read a story entitled, "Fire". He was exposed to new vocabulary words. We dissected the passage so that Patrick can see how the author was able to include specific words that addressed the structure words. Patrick confidently matched each descriptive word to the structure word correctly, i.e loud-sound, yellow-color, jumped-movement, etc. Then Patrick was able to picture each sentence by sentence with the correct multiple-choice answers. Great work, Patrick. In FF, he did very well, also. He played Quail Mail, Magic Rabbit, and Buzz Fly. He has expressed that he thinks it is easy, so we may attempt to try the next level very soon. Super job, Patrick.
Patrick continued work on his flip book on Luxury Cars. He researched several cars, took notes in the form of bullet points, and navigated Google Chrome with increasing ease. We discussed fact and opinion, sounding out new words, acronyms, and navigation through websites. The skills he utilized include: fine motor, holding the pencil correctly, handwriting, note taking, locating pertinent information, reading simple tables, writing numbers in the hundreds and thousands, spacing between words, use of punctuation, and keyboarding.
Patrick completed two exercises in Fast ForWord where he practiced the following skills: phonemic awareness, letter-sound correspondence, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. He was required to sort pictures or written words by the first, last, or middle sound, and read and complete sentences by filling in missing words.
