making ten on a ten frame
Lesson Outline
Patrick completed lesson 5-3; making a ten on a ten frame. He looked at a ten frame as a whole, and determined which two parts make up the 10. We worked on making combinations of ten in the beginning of the year, so he felt confidant on this skill. He completed 3 problem solving and 2 critical thinking questions. He did great on today's lesson.

continent identification, comprehension
Lesson Outline
Patrick studied various maps to identify where the continents begin and end. He practiced pronouncing the names. We read the names on one map, and he had to find the matching continent on another map that was not labeled. He transferred the continent names to that map. By the end of the lesson, he was able to identify N. & S. America, Antarctica and Africa. We read a selection from Incredible Animals about Giraffes in Africa. Patrick paraphrased what he learned by recalling facts. He will have a quiz next week on the continents.

Lesson Outline
Patrick re-read A Place Called Home and took the comprehension quiz. It was difficult for him to understand the the order of a city, state, and country from least to greatest. He worked on identifying individual thoughts to know where a sentence begins and ends. He read various groups of sentences and used a red crayon to resemble a stop sign every time a thought was complete. This was challenging in the beginning, but with time, he mastered the concept beautifully. He brainstormed various thoughts about his dogs and recorded two to show he understood where his thought began, ended, and began again. Great job!

Recognizing Numbers on a Ten Frame
Lesson Outline
Vocab: ten frame Patrick completed 5-2; recognizing numbers on a ten frame. He learned that if the the ten frame is entirely filled up, he should look at it and instantly know it's ten. If it is one away from being filled up, he should instantly know it's 9, etc. (counting back: 10. 9) Because of the symmetry of the ten frame, (2 rows of 5) if the first row is filled, he should knows it is 5. If the row and 2 more of the second row is filled, he should know it's 7. (counting on: 5. 6, 7) He learned how to look at the ten frame and count on or back depending on what was more efficient. It is more difficult for Patrick to count back. He completed word problems containing the above information.

contractions, main idea and details, continents
Lesson Outline
Patrick has been improving in his daily calendar activities. He officially successfully skip counted dimes and nickels, alternating by counting by 10's to 5's. He wrote words on jack-o-lantern eyes and the corresponding contraction on the mouth. He used the pieces as a matching game and used the contraction and individual words interchangeably in a sentence. Patrick read Level C: A Place Called Home. He completed a venn diagram that provided the main idea of the writing, and he was successful with coming up with 4 supporting details. Vocab: city, state, country, continent. We read a poem called, Seven Continents, and sung it to the tune of Row, Row, Row Your Boat. Patrick learned the names of the 7 continents and identified them in the dojo on the wall map. He learned that they all start with A, with the exception of one starting with E.

Keyboarding/FF/VV
Lesson Outline
Patrick had another great day in typing class. He learned the . and / key and reviewed all of the others. Patrick continued in his FF program. In VV, Patrick did a word imaging activity. In this activity he was asked to verbalize what he has visualized for a known noun. In prior lessons he was asked to verbalize from a picture. Today's noun was "pirate". This activity was not as easy for Patrick, but he did very well considering this is his first week trying this new technique. Patrick's original response to, " what does the word pirate make you picture?" was, "this is the hardest thing yet". He had to create his own imagery in this activity. I look forward to seeing the progress that I know Patrick will develop.
