Chapter 1 Review
Lesson Outline
Anna and Quinn have been studying plants, cells and living things for the past 2 and a half weeks. After many activities and experiments we have come to the end of chapter one. Today we worked through many worksheets reviewing all that we had learned in chapter one. Anna and Quinn reviewed all their chapter 1 vocabulary and concepts. They both seemed to understand most of the concepts in chapter 1. Their test will be on Friday. I told them, I would give them a review sheet on Wednesday to study more for the test!

Lesson 5-2: Counting Coins
Lesson Outline
Today we began our session by reviewing pennies, dimes and nickels. We then introduced todays' new coins, the quarter and the half dollar. We counted by 1's, 5's, 10's, 25's and 50's. Anna and Quinn then practiced counting a given number of coins. They each completed the lesson5-2 practice worksheet. We finished by finding different ways to make a number. For example, 30 cents can be made using 6 nickels, a quarter and a nickel or 3 dimes. Quinn did very well with todays' lesson. Anna is still struggling a little bit with remembering the amount of each coin.

Horse Painting and Off Road Truck Track Continued
Lesson Outline
Today Anna put finishing touches on her horse and started painting the background. For the background Anna is painting an abstract landscape. Anna considered background colors that would compliment the colors used in the horse. Just like with the horse, Anna is mixing all of her colors from the three primary colors plus white.

Today Quinn continued to think up and construct obstacles for his off road course. Quinn is incorporating recycled materials such as bottle tops and soda can tabs. While constructing his obstacles, Quinn has been experimenting with using glue and tape to see what works best on all of the different materials involved.

Plants
Lesson Outline
Today we began science class by discussing how plants react to their environment. We then moved on to lesson 3. We started this lesson by doing a short experiment. Anna and Quinn used a hand lens to compare a pea seed and a soaked pea seed. They were able to see that the water soaked pea was beginning to sprout from the inside and was growing out of the seed. They recorded their observations on their lab report worksheet and drew a picture of what they saw. Anna and Quinn then watched a Brainpop video on the life cycle of plants. They took the quiz and then we drew a flow chart on the life cycle of a plant. This flow chart contained seed, seedling, young adult plant and adult plant. We finished class by reading about the life cycle of a plant in the textbook.

Anna struggled with this activity more than Quinn. Up until the end of class she was still using the reference sheet to make sure she had the correct name of the coin.

Diagnostic test
Lesson Outline
I administered a diagnostic test to Anna and Quinn to evaluate listening, conversing, writing, and reading. Both did well on the listening (comprehension) part, with both scoring as intermediate. Anna scored as intermediate on the reading portion as well. They both scored as beginners in conversing and writing. As expected, their passive language skills are more advanced than their active skills.

Quinn helped tighten several of the screws we used to mount the engine and gearbox, and he helped find the pieces we needed. I found that he had some trouble staying focused and got very impatient. This is a very tedious and involved build that is going to take great attention to detail and lots of concentration. He seems to be more interested in playing with the pieces and jumping ahead to see the finished product than in the build process. I had to constantly refocus him to keep him involved and being helpful. Some of the pieces are extremely small and require very fine motor skills to handle and assemble. I am hoping that as we do this, it will pique his interest and help him to develop a keen sense of detail as well as developing his fine motor skills and hand strength.

Lesson Comments
Quinn is making nice sounds when he plays his chords. He always gets the chord shape correct, but many times plays it out of position. Once fixed, it sounds fine. I would like to see him focus more and really pay attention to playing in the correct position. Overall a really good class. His chord changes are getting better.

Anna: Anna did a very good job learning her new songs and really did great playing her previously assigned piece, Home on the Range.
