Today in Social Studies, Quinn and Anna reviewed landforms. We began by looking at their classroom map and discussing from memory the different types of landforms. We then went to the computer lab to watch a BrainPop Jr. on landforms. The children enjoyed learning about the landforms from Annie and Moby. As a follow-up, Quinn and Anna played a concentration game with many different landforms. We ended the session, by taking a BrainPop Jr. landform quiz cooperatively.
We began the session with a review of Spanish color words. Both Quinn and Anna remembered most of the colors. Next we read the book Oso pardo, oso pardo, que ves ahi? (Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?) Quinn and Anna were able to apply their knowledge of the colors to predict which type of animals would be coming next in the story. Several times they knew the animal by name (horse, cat, dog). Next, we went to the computer lab and watched a short video that explained the Mexican holiday, The Day of the Dead. The children loved learning about this holiday and were especially excited that the decorative skulls are made from different types of candy. We concluded the lesson by reading a book called, El Dia de los Muertos.
new poses: slide, half moon, ragdoll, lunge (dragon); Halloween yoga
Lesson Outline
I brought in color foam boards of our new poses today: slide, half moon, ragdoll, and lunge. We did a "Yogis on the Moon" song with half moon, and used props (balls) for other poses. We then started our Halloween yoga project, creating poses for the holiday. Then we played the game where we picked out papers from a pumpkin to tell us what pose to do. We also did "mummy roll" rolling up in the yoga mats. Free play at end of class.
