Activity 1.3: Estimating sizes
Lesson Outline
1. Estimate the sizes of the given shapes. 2. Compare the differences between the actual size and the estimate. 3. Find the sum of the differences, the absolute differences and the squared differences. 4. Average your estimates with the estimates of others (in this case, Trevor averaged his estimates with mine). 5. Compare the results of the averaged estimates to the results of your own estimates.
Assignment
Activity 1.4 (write a paragraph), Read over the summary of key concepts, do problems 1.32, 1.33, 1.35, and 1.37

Trevor will complete a review assignment for chapter 1 tonight. Tomorrow he will take a chapter 1 quiz.
Session Date
Lesson Topic
1.4 Shifting, Reflecting and Stretching Graphs
Lesson Outline
1) common functions in algebra: including f(x)=c, f(x)=x, f(x)=abs(x), f(x)=sqrt(x), f(x)=x^2, f(x)=x^3; 2) Vertical and horizontal shifts: vertical shift g(x)=f(x)+c or f(x)-c; horizontal shift: g(x)=f(x+c) or f(x-c); 3) Reflecting graphs: reflection in x-axis h(x)=-f(x); reflection in y-axis h(x)=f(-x); 4) Nonrigid transformations (stretching and shrinking): for vertical transformations y=cf(x), stretch if c is greater than one, shrink if c is between 0 and 1; for horizontal transformations, shrink if c is greater than one and stretch if c is between 0 and 1

Lesson Topic
receptors
Lesson Outline
define receptor and use examples from previous bio studies
define ligand, expand on the term exogenous and endogenous
review and explain how the molecular formula changes the action of a chemical and its physical properties
discuss the specificity of a ligand-receptor complex, and how a minor change in the structure can alter the response.
Assignment

Lesson Comments
Trevor is very inquisitive, asks interesting and relevant questions and has good recall of biological and chemical knowledge. I think he is starting to see how the biology and the chemistry are tying together. This course attempts to relate the biology, chemistry and physiology.

Lesson Outline
— Grade and review all sections of Practice AP English Language and Composition test
— Student prompted to grade his own essay, using rubric provided by College Board. Instructor later began comparison/discussion of student's perception and instructor's perception of the essay. (Note: This discussion barely began; it will most likely occupy 10-15 minutes of our next session)
