We discussed an ongoing international conference on climate change in which the French representative is recommending that a pending agreement exclude the U. S. We then explored possible motivations for either embrace of the issue of man-made, malignant climate change or skepticism. As for 2016, we discussed what Carly Fiorina brings to the festivities. And then discussed the mechanics of the Electoral College.

Good, wide-ranging session in which Cal played an active part.
We reviewed the first week of the summer study program that I created to prepare Cal for the Human Geography class at Dreyfus in the fall.

Cal did his usual bathroom break to begin the session, lasting 15 minutes. Very frustrating. Moreover, he did nothing of what was recommended for study last week.
Today, Cal and I worked on Algebra and Geometry problems from the Post-Test in the study guide. This included understanding easy ways to solve systems of multiple equations and multiple unknowns. Cal needs to keep practicing repetition of these types of problems to solidify his ability to move terms from one side of an equal sign to the other, combine like terms, remove variables from the denominator of an expression, and factor complex polynomial equations.
We reviewed the continents of Europe and Asia in terms of major countries, languages, cities and landmarks.

Cal had not even glanced at the geography doc I created for him and emailed to his mother the week before. So, it was almost like starting from the beginning.
Today, Cal and I worked on problems from the first practice test. I intentionally made Cal work the first ten problems alone during the first fifteen minutes of class as a way to test his ability to solve Alegbra 1 level problems quickly. Cal and I worked through word problems, solving systems with multiple unknowns using multiple equations, and geometry problems.
ISIS Developments and some Middle East Demographics
Lesson Outline
We talked about the various competing factions in the Middle East, some of their differences and similarities. ISIS is a Sunni Muslim coalition. Iran and a good chunk of Iraq are Shia and detest Sunnis. Bashar Al-Assad, Syria's ruler is Alawite which are Shia too, but they are modernized and Western in outlook as well as being a minority in Syria. We also discussed the conflicting statements from high Administration officials regarding Iraq's lack of willingness to fight ISIS.

The material we tried to cover in this session could have been covered in a semester.
Today, Cal and I worked through the remainder of problems in the text for understanding geometry and ways to relate Algebra to word problems. Cal asked for an assistance with one of his problems from the chapter on Discrete Mathematics. Cal worked on a number of problems that required a good understanding of the Pythagorean Theorem. We also discussed the ideas behind the equations used to relate dimensions of simple polygons to the area of the polygons. We also worked through using variables to represent parts of a geometric figure, such as an angle or an unknown length.
We did a broad overview of the world in terms of its major geographical features. We utilized a doc that I had prepared for this purpose.

Lesson Comments
Cal has no foundational knowledge of geography. He doesn't even know where all the oceans are or how they rank in size. Moreover, he was not familiar with all the continents. So, our work is cut out!
