As mentioned yesterday, Cal has absolutely no clue with regard to where nations are or even US states and major cities. So, he has his work cut out! I spoke with Evelyn and she is getting him some interactive software packages as an instructional aid.
We discussed the Waco shootout in which 9 bikers were killed, 170 people arrested and more than 100 weapons were captured by police. We explored the prospects for various candidates on both sides as more candidates appeared to have entered the races.

Lesson Comments
Cal seemed to enjoy speculating and playing "what if?" with the 2016 run-ups. However, he was not impressed when I suggested that Dana Perrino might be an attractive vice presidential candidate.
Today, Cal and I continued our work on geometry and understanding angles and polygons in geometry. We talked about how no matter what type of quadrilateral one has, the internal angle of the quadrilateral all will add up to 360 degrees. Similarly, I reiterated from last time how a triangle's internal angels add to 180 degrees. Also, I showed Cal how the internal angles in a pentagon all add up to 540 degrees. We worked through a number of problems related to congruent angle and complementary angles in intersecting lines and in quadrilaterals. Finally, we learned about the Pythagorean theorem for right triangles, and we discussed some of the history of the mathematician Pythagoras.
Today, Cal and I discussed and worked through a number of problems on Discrete Mathematics. First, we talked about an element in a set of numbers. We then moved on to talk about a universal set and a subset of a larger universal set. We discussed the idea of a complement of a subset, which is all numbers in a universal set not included in the subset. Cal and I worked through a number of problems that dealt with sets, subsets, complements of subset, unions, intersections, cross-products of multiple sets and elements within a set.
Today, Cal and I finished our discussion of radical expressions and laws regarding factoring numbers out of radical expressions such as square roots and cubic roots. We worked through simplifying and solving a number of problems containing radical expressions. Then, we moved on to understanding some of the fundamental concepts of Discrete mathematics. We began by focusing on the idea of a number set and the symbols and meanings of a union and intersections of multiple number sets. Cal and I began working through a few problems to identify unions and intersections.
British Elections; The Run-up to the 2016 US Presidential Race.
Lesson Outline
We discussed the Conservatives' surprising lopsided win in the UK. We also explored possible ramifications--the EU and the Scottish question. On this side of the Atlantic, we discussed the plethora of Republican candidates, how the various rival candidates will deal with ISIS and immigration.
Cal and I began our discussion by completing a number of problems related to fractions and ratios. We then moved on to work through Radical Expressions including operations to simplify radical expressions. In addition, we worked through a number of problems to simplify radical expressions containing variables.
Cal was extremely confident with regard to the testing, showing no apprehension whatsoever.

Despite a couple mistakes on the actual answer form with regard to the Sample questions, unimportant to the actual test, Cal was upbeat without anxiety. This is reflective of a significant change in his demeanor that I have witnessed in the last two weeks. He has really come far out of his shell. Mind you, his chronic laziness remains intact. But I think this is a positive direction.
