1) Quotations: Discuss how patriarchy is evidenced in the relationship between men and women in the play. How does the way that each gender mistrust one another get each into trouble? What are the ways that patriarchy is still alive today?
2) Discuss the theme of Independence in the play: How does women's independence become a threat the the patriarchal society? How is that threat dealt with here? How do we read the idea that Shakespeare is critiquing patriarchal society from a male point of view?
3) Theme Assignment: Identify 5 themes from Othello. Make an argument for each theme, using key points from the play to support your analysis.

3)Discussion Questions: Compare and contrast the Othello from Act one with the Othello in Act 3.How has he changed? Did Othello give an early indications of his jealousy? If not, why does he succumb so easily to this emotion? Does Shakespeare stereotype Othello according to the popular misconceptions of Africans and slaves at the time? How?
