Lesson Outline
1) Quotations: Discuss how patriarchy is evidenced in the relationship between men and women in the play. How does the way that each gender mistrust one another get each into trouble? What are the ways that patriarchy is still alive today?
2) Discuss the theme of Independence in the play: How does women's independence become a threat the the patriarchal society? How is that threat dealt with here? How do we read the idea that Shakespeare is critiquing patriarchal society from a male point of view?
3) Theme Assignment: Identify 5 themes from Othello. Make an argument for each theme, using key points from the play to support your analysis.
4) Discuss Act 4 Scene 2.

1)Oral Quiz: What, structurally, happens in Act 3 Scene 4? What are some new themes that are introduced within this particular scene?
2)Discuss Jessica's Quotations: Using three quotations from today's reading, Jessica compiles arguments about characters and/or the Othello's theme based on her analysis.
3)Discussion Questions: Compare and contrast the Othello from Act one with the Othello in Act 3.How has he changed? Did Othello give an early indications of his jealousy? If not, why does he succumb so easily to this emotion? Does Shakespeare stereotype Othello according to the popular misconceptions of Africans and slaves at the time? How?

Jess took the ch. 5 test today. We should be at the halfway point of the stats material next week. She put the last 3 tests in the mail today so we should receive them soon. We weren't receiving her faxes, and when we finally did, I wasn't able to read it (really light in some spots, black splotch in others).
