Act 2 Scene 1 of Othello
Lesson Outline
1) Oral Quiz: Describe the major events of Act 1 Scene 2 of Othello. What new conflicts are introduced into the list of offenses against Iago?
2) Jessica presents her quotations from her reading of Act 1 Scene 2, arguing what each quotation reveals about the newly introduced characters Cassio, Emilia, and the further development of Desdemona.
3) Discussion Questions: What happens between Cassio and Desdemona that Iago decides he will use in his web of manipulation? What do these actions suggest about Cassio and Desdemona? Are they acting in an inappropriate manner, or are they merely misunderstood? What do we find out about the relationship between Othello and Desdemona? Why does Iago hate Othello?
3) Compare Iago with Grendel in a metaphorical trail. Who can we argue is less reprehensible? Who is worse? The murderer or the master manipulator? Why?
