Othello Act 1 Scene 3 Discussion and Tragedy Overview
Lesson Outline
1) Discuss the Tragedies of the Greek Tradition (Antigone, Oedipus Rex, etc.) and how these plays helped to define the tradition of Shakesperean Tragedies: Define Tragic Hero, Tragic Flaw, Hamartia, and Catharsis. Discuss whether or not seeing such displays of emotion can in fact produce a purging effect in an audience.
2) Discuss Jessica's Quotations: What, based on Jesscia's findings, does each character reveal about race? What is the relationship between appearance vs. reality and justice vs. injustice? How is Desdemona's voice negated in the Senate chambers?
3) Discuss Act 1 Scene 3: Why does the Duke call Othello into the senate session? Who is attacking? How does this manifest the idea that Othello has an honorable reputation? What happens initially when Brabantio accuses someone of taking his daughter? What happens when he accuses Othello? What does Othello say about his courting of Desdemona?

Jessica did a great job interpreting Shakespeare today! Although she was not entirely thrilled to discuss the play, her pinpointing of some unsaid/unspoken themes in the play was very profound.
Jess will be able to: 1) Determine which type of design to use to carry out an experiment; 2) Explain the method for controlling lurking variables; 3) Design an experiment using a randomized block design; 4) Design an experiment used a matched pairs design.

I am still waiting for Jess's test (she will send it when she gets back to PA). Class went well today. I allowed Jess to complete her assignment in class rather than moving on to the next section.
Jessica continues to impress me as a student. She received the exam (email) an hour before our class. By the time we began the class, she had completed most of the exam independently.
She scored 100 on the exam. She clearly understood the content and information.
1)Oral Quiz: Describe the major events of Othello Act 1 Scenes 1 and 2: What are the major conflicts introduced? Provide a Characterization for Iago; how exactly does he plan on bringing down the Moor Othello?
2)Discussion Questions for Acts 1 Scenes 1 and 2 of Othello: What is the nature of Iago and Roderigo's friendship? How are they united in their feelings towards Othello? What do the two men say to Brabantio? What is the senator's relationship to Desdemona? How does Iago incite the senator to action? What is the relationship between appearance and reality?
3)Discuss the film Shakespeare in Love: How does the film portray life during the Renaissance Period? How does the film illustrate young Shakespeare? What is the relationship between Drama and Love here?

Lesson Comments
I still have not received Jess's test. She tried to fax it earlier in the week. She will try to have her mom fax it again (Jess is in Maryland and is not sure that her mom will be able to locate the test at home). Today's session went well. The chapter we are currently working through is more "boring" than many of the other chapters - lots of writing, not much math.
Jess will be able to: 1) Describe bias (sampling and non-sampling errors); 2) Describe the method for choosing a sample using a stratified random sample and a cluster sample and determine which type of random sample is most appropriate in a situation.
