We began by reviewing the fundamental theorem of calculus for definite integrals. I explained that, in some cases, there are functions that are not amenable to integration formulas and in such cases, we need ways to estimate the value of the definite integral and the trapezoidal rule is one of those methods. We applied the rule in an example and compared the result with results obtained graphically.

Lesson Comments
Jess's attitude is fine. We'll need a bit more practice.
Thomas Jefferson "State of the Union Address" and Willa Cather's "The Art of Fiction"
Lesson Outline
1)In class assignment: read and answer multiple choice questions for each passage. 25 minutes per passage; 10 minute answer discussion.
2) Discuss pacing and time constraint options.
Review and discuss chapter 36. Focus on beginnings of the Cold war and its causes, the "Baby-Boom", the economic boom, changes and contradictions in the role of women in the US.
discuss respiratory disorders like pulmonary edema and pmneumonia. List and discuss nervous control of respiration as well as coughinh, sneezing and hiccups

We discussed slope-field problems in general as a review of the classes from before the break. We covered the derivative as the slope of a "parent" function, local linearity of non-linear functions, how the little "pieces" in the slope field indicate the slope of the parent function at the particular point which results from substituting values of x in the equation of the derivative. We reviewed that integrating the derivative gives the parent function but doesn't locate it in the plane because of the arbitrary nature of the constant. Then, we picked a couple of values for the constant of integration and plotted the resulting equations.

Lesson Comments
Jess seemed a lot more alert than she seemed in the sessions leading up to break. I think she's glad to be home (even if it's cold), glad to be away from the distractions of work and perhaps recovered from a mild concussion.
Outline, discuss and have student exhibit the various pulmonary volume measurements. Discuss their importance in certain diagnostic procedures and the averages for each.
Introduce external and internal respiation and emphysema.

Lesson Comments
reviewed some earlier material to "kick start" the lesson. Jess had some good questions and was interested in discussing some of the common disorders, like emphysema.
Discuss "Eat Em! Crush Em!" and "Black Men in Public Spaces"
Lesson Outline
1)Discuss "Eat Em!" essay: the general here is that football is a more benign form of war. Do you agree? Choose quotes from the essay to interrogate.
2)Discuss "Black Men in Public Spaces": What does this author suggest about racial perception?
Assignment
Multiple Choice Assignment; Study for rhetorical terms test
We reviewed the problem we worked yesterday Then we launched another problem in which were given a dy/dx equation, a point in the plane. We constructed our own slope field, used it to estimate and graph the "parent" function.

We had to rush and completed most of the problem; Jess was not as traumatized today and seemed to understand most of what is happening. She will be heading for home during the break next week.
