1)Go over synthesis essay requirements again: thesis statements, topic sentences, interacting with sources, etc.
2)Go over "Locavore Movement" Synthesis essay: Potential introductions and body paragraphs.
3) Discuss Jessica's essay in comparison.

Good session. Jess was feeling better and we had a good discussion.
We began by reviewing (1) the meaning of the derivative; (2) the slope of a function; and (3) the relationship between the derivative and its antiderivative (indefinite integral). We then used the xy plane to construct a slope field for a given differential equation. We then used the slope field to sketch a graph of the function's differential equation on the slope field. We integrated the differential equation to get an "original" function, graphed it on the graphing calculator, and compared the calculator results with the manual results.

This was a killer session. The number of interconnected concepts was huge and many of them were abstract. Jess tried hard to stay with me, but I'm virtually certain that we'll need to retrace our steps more than once in order to wrap our arms around a fairly complex package of concepts and procedures. Her "on-the-job" distractions aren't helpful but her concentration is still impressive.
We reviewed last week's work and then explored a problem involving a definite integral. We solved the problem two ways: once with a "partial" change of variables and again with a "complete" change of variables and got the same solution.

Jess's attitude is fine. She seems to have a solid grasp of the material. Sometimes I wonder about her recall. She is still under some job-related stress due to the situation at the barn. She'll be returning to PA in a week or so.
