Lesson Topic
Derivatives (Cont'd.)
Lesson Outline
We reviewed the definition of the derivative and the shortcut for finding the derivative of a simple polynomial function. Then we worked several problems in which we applied the formula.

Lesson Topic
Using the definition to differentiate.
Lesson Outline
We reviewed the difference-quotient definition of the derivative. We then reviewed using the formula (short-cut) to finding the derivative and then found it using the definition (The latter is far more complex than the formula.)

Lesson Comments
Jess and her Mom are to be commended for their initiative. Electrical power at their home was out, so they went into Dad's office with a laptop and took the class there. That resulted in a slightly shortened session, but it definitely made something out of nothing. Brava!

The Derivative
Lesson Outline
We discussed the definition of the derivative of a function as the limit of the difference quotient. We then discussed using a short cut (formula) to find the derivative of a third-edgreee polynomial function.

Lesson Comments
Our communications were a bit spotty but we were able to get through okay.. Jess's attitude is great. I told her that tomorrow we'd bypass the short-cut and find the derivative using the difference quotient definition. But we'd do that only to validate the definition. At other times, we'll stay with the formula.
