Tess of the D'Urbervilles pgs. 112-60
Lesson Outline
1)Discuss the evolution of the relationship between Tess and Angel Clare. Discuss whether or not Tess is committing an act of deception in denying Angel access to her past with Alec D'Urberville. Should Tess reveal this dark history? Why/why not?
2)How does the novel perceive the relationship between the present and the past? At times, Hardy seems to dismiss the knightly D'Urberville family by negating the Durberyfield's connection to this family, at other times he describes the rape of Tess as retribution for "the sins of her forefathers (123). On the other hand, Tess cannot escape her past with Alec. Where does the narrator stand in this regard?
3) Describe Hardy's use of light in the scene where Angel finally confesses his love for Tess? Why are these images interposed with those of death and fog?
4) Jessica chooses a song that best fits the situation between Tess and Angel Clare
5) Jessica begins reading Tess pgs. 160-89.
