Will's confidence grew as he worked more problems.
Another great session with Will. He is playing with greater confidence and his timing is consistently improving. Very good sight reading and technique.
Industrial Revolution-Electricity and Social Trends
Lesson Outline
We discussed the major impact of expanded availability of electricity, both at home and out in the cities. We went on to the social trends- the women's suffrage movement, public education trends--more education for girls, compulsory education and better trained teachers. We talked of the emergence of three classes:the elites, a burgeoning middle class and a poor class of laborers and farmers. We discussed entertainment and and social interaction.

Will took an active and positive part in our discussions.
To prepare for his pending PowerPoint presentation, Will was given some time during class to come up with more findings on Alan Moore's early career (1974-1984). Will used his research radar to avoid sites like wikipedia, finding a reputable fan webpage endorsed by Alan Moore himself. Will discovered some interesting information about Moore's early work relationships; he originally worked for Marvel UK before transferring to DC Comics, of which he would make famous works such as V for Vendetta, Watchmen, and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. After spending some time on the PowerPoint, Will and I read Watchmen together. The comic uses many colloquialisms, and Will and I had fun using different voices to distinguish different characters. We nearly finished the chapter, so we will work on our discussion next week. Good day.

Lesson Comments
Will finished the section on 16th note rhythms and got into playing 16th note triplets. He did a fantastic job and I am very proud of the progress he has made. He did very well with the new exercises.
Will worked on a writing assignment that asked him to consider the alternative to yesterday's discussion about Dr. Manhattan, the "super human" force that won the war in Vietnam for Nixon. Yesterday, Will was asked to consider the advantages of having someone capable of manipulating space and matter as an ally. Will responded that having someone like Dr. Manhattan as a friend would essentially mean that no other countries would "mess with" the U.S. Today, Will was asked to consider the disadvantages of having Dr. Manhattan as an ally. Will's response was interesting: Mr. Stewart articulated that the cost of "keeping Dr. Manhattan happy" would soon outweigh the benefits. He also indicated that the relationship between the U.S. government and Dr. Manhattan would be one of continuous tension: Dr. M. would be powerful enough to destroy the country if he became displeased with the government; therefore, the relationship would be one of fear, not of mutual cooperation. I was very happy with Will's inductions. We continued by doing more research for his PowerPoint presentation.
Today began with Will presenting two primary sources--a photograph and a list of voters--that he obtained from a family member. This demonstrated his grasp of the difference between primary and secondary sources. We discussed the items. Thereafter, we held a question-and-answer period before the Chapter 11 quiz. Will asked a number of excellent questions, leading to a stimulating and detailed discussion. Will suggested that, in the remaining time, I give him one of the quiz questions, with the remaining questions to be held in abeyance, until our next class. This was a creative idea on his part, and I agreed to it. Question one of the Chapter 11 quiz was then administered.
Assignment
Prepare for remainder of Chapter 11 quiz; further research for paper
First of all, we conducted a small experiment in which we investigated how the Right Triangle Similarity worked out in a 45-45-90 degree triangle and reached an interesting conclusion. The smaller similar triangles are also congruent! We reviewed the geometric mean and worked several problems finding various parts of similar triangles.
