We reviewed the "tools in our kit" for proving pairs of triangles congruent. I explained the whole point of proving triangles congruent was getting to the point where we could deduce everything about the two triangles in question: Corresponding Parts of Congruent Triangles are Congruent (CPCTC).

We explored the foregoing issues together via whiteboard. Will is definitely getting used to what, till now, has been uncharted waters.
Prior to administering the Chapter 4 quiz, I gave Will an opportunity to ask questions about the material. He took advantage of this opportunity, especially as he said he had forgotten to take his book home last night. He asked a number of questions, which I answered in detail. When Will said he was ready, I administered the Chapter 4 quiz. Following conclusion of the quiz, we began discussion of Chapter 5, focusing on the initial disagreements among colonists as to the goal of the military conflict against Britain in 1775, and the dissipation of those disagreements into a more unified position in favor of independence by 1776.
Will reviewed the content and concepts of chapter 15 today, including: conquest and exploration of the Americas, Spanish and Portuguese colonies in the Americas, English colonies in North America, the Atlantic Slave Trade, and the effects of Global Contact. In addition to this review, Will read related portions of two new supplemental books.

We reviewed the contents of our "bag of tricks" for proving triangles congruent--SSS, SAS and ASA postulates. We then segued into the Angle-Angle-Side Theorem which we proved together. Then we worked several proofs together, with Will's role in developing each proof increasing.

Will kept himself involved in the discussions and exercises. His grasp of the two-column proof process is increasing as his comfort level.
We began by going over the homework assignment from last evening and clarifying issues when necessary. We continued by exploring several proofs in which we were able to use the SAS Postulate to prove two triangles congruent. We emphasized sifting through the "Given" info for "clues" on how to proceed. We then introduced the Angle-Side-Angle Postulate and concluded with a sketching drill illustrating the postulate.

Will participated fully in the session. His comfort level isn't very high when it comes to mapping out two-column proofs, but this is normal. My hope is that continued practice will groom his intuition and thus raise his confidence.
Today's lesson addressed the progressive decline in relations between England and its colonies from 1763 to 1775. Topics included the popular discontent with British taxes and permanent installation of British troops in the colonies, the Boston Massacre, the Tea Act of 1773, the political involvement of both genders in the colonies (Daughters of Liberty as well as male politicians in colonial assemblies), the Boston Tea Party, colonial militias of "minutemen," the warning rides of Paul Revere and William Dawes, and the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775. Will's participation in class discussion was active and substantial.

"Good class," said Will when we broke for the day.
We reviewed this morning's material and then re-introduced the Side-Side-Side Postulate. We then moved ahead to the Side-Angle-Side (SAS) Postulate for proving pairs of triangles congruent. Then we worked through several textbook example problems in which we used the SAS Postulate and given information to prove triangles congruent.
