College goals
I began by returning to Will his graded Chapter 1 quiz (28/30) and going over it with him. We then took up our discussion of Chapter 2, focusing today on the major differences between the early colonies, the particularly religious motivation of Puritans in Massachusetts, the growth of proprietary colonies, the importance of the Navigation Acts, and the concept of the "middle ground" as a way to view the regions inhabited by the native Americans, settled by the English, in the seventeenth century. This concept is of fairly recent historiographical origin. Will was given his choice of taking the Chapter 2 quiz tomorrow or holding off until next week, by which time we will be well into Chapter 3. He chose tomorrow.
At the outset, Will asked a question about mercantilism, which I answered and made sure he understood. The Chapter 1 quiz was then administered. Following completion of the quiz, we began consideration of Chapter 2, focusing on the Jamestown colony, the importance of tobacco as a cash crop, the "Headrights" system of land ownership as an inducement to colonists, and the eventual importation of women into the hitherto all-male colony. Judie stopped in briefly to inform Will that he would be moved to a new, larger room, as he has decided to continue at our school through graduation. Judie also indicated that I would be teaching US History to Will for 36, rather than only 18, weeks. Winners all around.
I subbed for Kevin today, and Will and I had a good time. He jammed on drums and guitar, showed me some of his licks, and we spent the rest of the time talking about musicians, bands, and the greatest concerts ever.
Today we got into the heart of the second act, and spent a lot of time talking about Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. They are small characters, but very important in my opinion.
We watched the second act of Hamlet today, and have now caught up to where we've read. I think it's important to see it performed as well as reading it. I'm very impressed with how well Will remembers and understands the details of the play. Most importantly, his understanding of the different characters and their motivations will really help him with his overall appreciation of the play.
I substituted for Jennifer today. In the first session, we finished reading Act 2 of Hamlet. We had a great discussion about the "What a piece of work is man" speech, and then spent the second session watching the Kenneth Branagh version on dvd. Will still had a little trouble following the movie, but his ear will adapt as we keep going.
