Today we continued to discuss ancient cave drawings and the studies of paleontology and archaeology. We began to discuss the evolution of humans and that there were different species of hominids. We watched a National Geographic special to learn more about the evolution of humans: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehV-MmuvVMU
and then began to discuss the development of making stone tools.
Arianna and I read chapter 19 of her Harry Potter book, the climax of the story at last! She made predictions as we read and was able to confirm most of them. We noticed how JK cleverly wrapped up most of the bits and pieces, clues that she placed along the way. Arianna also noticed that there is one important piece of the puzzle that JK hasn't addressed, yet. Arianna added a new page to her COVID journal. Today's entry was about her choice for the first business to reopen, movie theaters.
Arianna and I continued to work on fractions and decimals, focusing on amounts greater than 1, and how they relate to each other. She wrote decimals and fractions greater than 1 represented on grids or number lines. She also reviewed writing decimals and fractions less than one to the tenths or hundredths place. Arianna finished with two mental math minutes and a review of comparing the lengths of objects.
Arianna had hurt her leg/ankle, so she wasn't really able to do dance/cheer/PE. We decided to work on some coloring/drawing together - which is actually a great mindfulness exercise! You get to practice focusing your attention, breathing, and concentrating all while exercising your imagination and creativity.
Arianna went to the Dancing page of her website and opened the page editor. She added all of the images from our last class to the website's media library and uploaded them to the page. She was missing an image, so I had her search for one, we resized it and placed it onto the page. She completed her work by labeling all of the images and saving the page.
This afternoon, Arianna made multiplication number sentences using information from word problems, chose the correct operation to make number sentences needed to solve word problems, found missing numbers in given fact families, and multiplied with multiples of ten. Then, she took a quiz on all of the skills practiced today. We also used the whiteboard to practice multi-digit addition, subtraction, and multiplication problems and Arianna completed a mental math minute.
Arianna read two articles in Scholastic News, one about the restoration of Jim Henson's puppets and the other about the endangered red panda. She completed a quiz on the Harry Potter at Home site. Because she read chapter 17 independently, she retold the key events before we read chapter 18 together.
This morning we began the lesson on fossils and learned about some of the prehistoric species found in modern day Florida. Then, we began to learn about cave drawings and ancient art forms. Arianna really enjoyed a short video about cave drawings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSF4zk2nsTU
After learning about some of the most well known cave drawings, I asked her if she would like to create her own cave drawing for homework. She has been asked to represent an important part of her life (or family's life) in her drawing.
At the end of the previous session, Arianna asked about the effects of dinosaurs going extinct. To learn more about dinosaurs and the subsequent species that took over the Earth, we watched a short video about dinosaurs and prehistoric species: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VORXnycrnc. We will continue this lesson next session with a discussion of fossils.
