Chapter 6 – “Southeast and Gulf States”- Lesson 3 –“Island and People” and Lesson 4 “Coastal Regions Around the World”- she read the lessons and we discussed them as she read, she noticed the challenges that faced the people living in coastal areas and islands off the coast of the U.S. We will continue tomorrow.
Today, Arianna and I used number lines to name distances in both fractions and decimals. Arianna counted the distance between 2 whole numbers to determine the denominator before counting to the given point for the numerator. She also divided number lines into 10 equal parts to represent decimals to the tenths place. Then, a mental math minute was completed on basic addition and subtraction facts as well as long division practice and 3-digit number patterns.
After recalling what was happening to Harry Potter yesterday, Arianna and I read chapter 16. She remarked on the clues that JK keeps hinting at but not revealing their true meaning, yet. Arianna adjusted her thinking about one of the characters after learning something new. Even though we are nearing the climax of the story, it still feels impossible to predict what will happen. Arianna played a memory game on Lumosity, and she added a new page to her COVID journal.
Drum technique: Sticking exercises and reading quarter note and eighth note rhythms.
Lesson Outline
We discussed basic musical notation and how to read quarter note and eighth note rhythms on the snare drum. We played several reading exercises of those different notes and rests in different combinations. We also played different rudimental stroke combinations including the double stroke, buzz stroke, flams, and paradiddles.
Assignment
Practice rudimental strokes: Singles, doubles, flams, and buzzes.
Arianna began with review questions on multiples of 10, numbers in written form to the hundred thousands place, and decimals to the thousandths place. Then she worked with relating decimals and fractions, writing a decimals and fractions shown on grids as well as number lines. She also completed two basic addition facts mental minutes, solved division and multiplication word problems, and made number sentences to match arrays.
This morning we discussed the fragility of ecosystems and observed how removing a species can have large effects. Arianna learned about the sardine fishery collapse: https://youtu.be/fLRCxX1uRPk and it's eventual recovery due to conservation efforts. Arianna asked a wonderful question at the end of the session that we will discuss tomorrow: "When dinosaurs like the T-rex went extinct, was there an effect on the ecosystem?"
Arianna added a new page to her COVID journal. Her topic today was how COVID is changing her communication with friends. She recapped most of chapter 15 in Harry Potter for me, and we read to the end together. Her retelling was very detailed and entertaining, she added her own opinion about the events as she narrated. We used the Reading Eggspress site to practice answering detail and inferential comprehension questions.
Arianna continued to research Weeki Wachee, Florida to add to her travel brochure. Using the web, she researched to learn more about this area of Florida. Today she added camping and canoeing the rivers and springs in this area. She added photos and information for the reader.
