Today, Arianna and I continued to work with understanding decimals. She related decimals and fractions in words and found decimals to the tenths on number lines as well as whole numbers and decimals to the tenths. Then, we reviewed how to use mental math to multiply 2-digit numbers by multiples of 10 and 100. Finally, we began a lesson on multiplying 2-digit by 2-digit numbers which we will continue working on this week.
Arianna shared her opinion about the ending of "The Prisoner of Azkaban" and retold the key events. We talked about the way JK chose to end the book, leaving it open for the next book in the series. We previewed several choices for our next book, tough work because Arianna is so enthralled with the HP series. She settled on "Among the Hidden," and we read the first two chapters. After some discussion, we agreed to try another selection tomorrow as this book was not interesting to her and was somewhat confusing. We watched a BrainPop video teaching how to use context clues and completed a 10 question quiz on the topic.
We watched scenes online and compared them to the scenes we have read so far in the Harry Potter script. We continued reading from the Harry Potter script.
Arianna went to the homepage of her website, opened the page editor, and imported a page template. Arianna searched for an image of Ariana Grande to use for header of her home page. I worked with Arianna to resize the image and she placed it into its section. She saved her work.
Arianna opened her Dance webpage, opened the page editor, and created a button. I walked Arianna through modifying the design of the button and then we searched for a link for her first video. Arianna found the link and pasted it into the link area of her button. Arianna saved her work, duplicated the button five times, placed a button under each picture and completed the process of adding links to the buttons. Arianna saved her work and tested the buttons.
Today we learned about the evolution of humans and characteristics of our ancestors and other species of hominids that are now extinct. PBS has produced a very interesting series that is avialable online called EONS that discusses ancient animals and processes. We watched one episode from this series that discussed how modern humans began to walk on two legs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bFtotU0of4
Arianna posed many interesting questions during today's lesson and was very excited about this topic.
Today, Arianna practiced writing both proper and improper fractions as decimals to the tenths or hundredths place and with and without whole numbers. Then, she took a quiz on today's material as well as yesterday's lessons on writing decimals and fractions greater than 1 represented on grids or number lines and writing decimals and fractions less than one to the tenths or hundredths place, scoring a 90%. We finished with two mental minutes, long division practice, and multiplication flash cards.
