This afternoon, Arianna took the Mathseeds end of lesson test on area. She used the area formula to find the area of rectangles, found the length of missing sides using the given information, found the area of two parts before taking one away from the other, and found the area of irregular shapes by breaking them into two parts and finding the area of both before adding. Then, she completed addition and subtraction mental math minutes, solved long division problems with and without remainders, and multiplied fractions.
Arianna read a Scholastic News article about a professional domino artist and watched a video showing some of her creations. She retold the events in Harry Potter from where we left off reading together to where she is today. We continued reading from there, learning some shocking information about Sirius Black. Arianna wrote a response to describe Harry's reaction and predicted actions prompted by that new information. She played a game to practice using divided attention on the Lumosity site.
I opened Photoshop on my computer and allowed screen sharing for Arianna. I set up a series of layers that we would use to create the logo for Arianna's webpage. I had Arianna bring in a Ariana Grande logo and she placed it within a circle that I had created for her. I walked her through choosing the colors for the circle and she used the same process to create colors for the logo mask and text. We saved the image as a PNG file. She opened the student site, went to the 2019-20 page, opened the editor, placed her logo link the logo to her home page and saved her work.
This morning we learned about special adaptations of cactus for living in the desert. Arianna read short passages and answered questions during our discussion. We learned about the spines of cactus and how some species use other animals to disperse their seeds.
Today, Arianna and I focused on finding the area of figures. She multiplied the length and width of figures and wrote the unit of measurement squared, broke figures into parts to determine the area of the parts before adding to find the total area, and found the area of 2 parts in order to take away one part from the other. Arianna also completed two mental math minutes on subtraction facts and practice finding elapsed time.
Today we completed our lesson on dolphin biology. We learned about the unique adaptations and behavior of dolphins through reading activities, answering questions, and watching short videos. Arianna also completed a word search and crossword activity to demonstrate her understanding of unit vocabulary.
Arianna and I read a Scholastic News article about the pros and cons of 'Tik-Tok.' We analyzed a persuasive letter written to convince a girl's parents that she should be able to use the app. After that, Arianna wrote a journal entry about not being able to go to her dance class during the pandemic. We read another chapter in Harry Potter and discussed Arianna's previous predictions; they were mostly accurate.
