Arianna and I worked on cumulative test questions from prior units pertaining to multi-digit multiplication and addition, matching arrays to number sentences, and long division with remainders. Then, she solved area word problems and finding the area of irregular shapes by breaking the shape into two parts. Arianna finished with two mental math minutes and a quick quiz on 2-D shapes.
Today we learned the answer to this week's question, "why don't dolphins drown when they are asleep?" - they can turn off half of their brain to rest! They even continue to swim while half sleeping. Another odd sleeping habit of marine mammals that we discussed is that sperm whales sleep vertically in the water column: https://www.livescience.com/59910-sleeping-sperm-whales.html
Arianna continued to research Weeki Wachee, Florida to create her travel Brochure. Using the web, she started to learn about its location and other information that will be helpful for her work on this project.
Today, Arianna worked in her fraction packet on changing improper fractions into whole or mixed numbers and added and simplified fractions with common denominators. We reviewed prime numbers to help Arianna identify when a fraction is already in simplest form. Then, she practiced finding the area and perimeter of shapes after determining the missing side's measurements. Arianna finished with a mental math minute and quick quizzes on modeling numbers and 3-D shapes.
Arianna added to her Coronavirus journal, talking about mask-wearing and how she feels about it. She read two chapters in Harry Potter and focused on using context to help with unfamiliar words. Arianna pointed out places within the text where J.K. (first name basis now) gives us clues that seem a bit too easy. She stated that when something is too obvious, it is probably there to lead us off track. Good analysis.
Arianna selected the Weeki Wachee as her Florida place to research and create her travel brochure. Using the web she started to learn about its location and other information that will be helpful for her work on this project.
This morning we discussed animal adaptations. Arianna completed a short quiz activity to demonstrate her understanding of different types of habitats and the three types of adaptations often present in animals: physical, behavioral, and reproductive (life cycle). We also continued to learn about dolphins to answer the question, "Why don't dolphins drown when they sleep?".
Today, Arianna took the Mathseeds end of map perimeter quiz, scoring a 100%. Then, she completed 2 mental math minutes on addition facts and quick quizzes on data categories and patterns. Next, Arianna practiced solving long division problems and used online multiplication flash cards. We finished with a review on adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators as well as simplifying fractions.
Arianna began writing a Coronavirus journal on the StoryJumper website. She set up the journal layout and wrote her first entry about how the virus has changed school for teachers and students. We read more of chapter 8 in Harry Potter after reviewing the beginning of the chapter. Although Arianna did not agree, our questions from yesterday were answered early on in the reading. She pointed out another clue to Hermoine's secret and she recalled the previous clues as she predicted a possible twist.
