Lesson Comments
Arianna was ready to draw with her special paint markers. She chose the drawing she'd like to do. And, then she decided to draw a magical forest behind the unicorn girl. She drew a very interesting tree with a perspective view which looked up and into the sky. It was quite magical.

Arianna read an article in Scholastic News about a woman who combines science with baking. She visited her YouTube site and watched her create dinosaur cookies. To enrich the reading, Arianna created 5 Harry Potter themed baked goods for an imaginary party. She drew and described each of the treats. Before beginning Harry Potter today, Arianna wrote a response to yesterday's reading and a prediction about what may happen during Hagrid's first lesson.

Lesson Outline
Arianna began with a spiral review on congruent shapes, comparing 6-digit numbers, patterns, decimals, and subtraction word problems. Then, she completed a mental math minute and quick review quizzes on skip counting patterns and object placement. On Mathseeds, Arianna worked on lessons in which she found the perimeter of objects and 1cm squares, estimated units of length, and measured objects with an inch ruler. Finally, she reviewed multiplying by 6 with online flashcards.

Lesson Comments
Nicole texted me with Arianna on my schedule 9-10, but Arianna never answered nor responded to my chat messages. She had a red dot for her status, so she might have had another teacher, but I'm not sure...

Lesson Outline
After retelling the previous chapter, Arianna and I continued reading her Harry Potter story. Things are still looking bleak for Harry, as a new teacher predicts his death. Arianna did much analyzing of J.K.Rowling's choice of detail in describing the divination classroom, and she pointed out that Hermoine is behaving in a way that is unexpected and long overdue. (Arianna's opinion) She drew her image of the hippogriffs as they were described, and she wrote a paragraph describing them and their predicted behavior.

Animal Architects and Human Impacts
Lesson Outline
Today we compared impacts that animals have on the environment (such as beaver, gopher tortoises, fire ants) to impacts of humans (farming, development, pollution). We watched a short video about gopher tortoises by FWC that was on a blog page by Defenders of Wildlife: https://defenders.org/blog/2015/05/gopher-tortoise-celebrating-keystone-species. And then we discussed an interesting conservation technique of growing coffee in shade:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fXBZ-a4ohk. This practice creates habitat for birds and other rainforest animals while also producing coffee, which helps the local economy and people.
