Lesson Outline
Arianna practiced proofreading and correcting spelling and usage errors using the IXL site today. She also read the next chapter in Harry Potter after summarizing the key events from yesterday’s reading. She made some predictions as she read, and used details from this and the previous book for support. At the end of our session Arianna began a storyboard for a story she will create.

Fractions
Lesson Outline
Today, Arianna worked in her fraction packet. She looked at given pairs of fractions and determined if they were equivalent, using multiplication or division. She also added and subtracted fractions with like denominators before finding the greatest common factors in order to simplify the fractions using division. Finally, Arianna completed 2 mental math minutes, reviewed the number of days in each month, and found missing numbers on number lines.

Fractions
Lesson Outline
Arianna and I focused on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. We wrote the multiples of each denominator in order to find a common multiple allowing for like denominators. Then, the fractions were able to be added or subtracted. We will spend a portion of our daily time on these types of problems because Arianna is still struggling with the concept of equivalent fractions and finding common denominators. Finally, a mental math minute on basic subtraction facts was completed as well a quick quizzes on subtraction, ordering numbers, and reading calendars.

Arianna and I read the next chapter in Harry Potter today. She pointed out several places in the story where the author gives us a foreshadowing of future events. She also made a strong connection to the two previous stories as Harry encounters a danger that no one else is aware of. We used Reading Eggspress to practice spelling words with the long 'u' sound.

Force and Motion
Lesson Outline
Today we started our next unit topic: Force, Energy, and Motion. We read short passages from the text on force, friction, and gravity and discussed concepts and vocabulary. We discussed how weight, gravity, and mass are related and watched a short video to observe how to use a spring scale to weigh an small turtle. Arianna enjoyed this example. We ended the session with a discussion of how gravity and mass are related. Arianna and I used this website to observe how gravity varies on different planets: https://www.exploratorium.edu/ronh/weight/.
