Arianna completed yesterday's IXL lesson on using context clues. She practiced finding the main idea of a selection and identifying causes and effects on the ReadingEggspress site. We completed chapter 2 and part of chapter 3 of "City of Ember," taking time to compare and contrast their history with our own.
Arianna started a WebQuest on Lewis and Clark. Throughout her quest she will have to learn and document information about the expedition. She will navigate various websites to identify various aspects of the journey including: where and when they traveled, who they met, and their discoveries. Using the information, she will learn how to use Google Slides and create an online journal using Google Slides .
We continued to learn about the history of humans with two short videos and discussion. The first video we watched was an overview of the our ancestors and relative (hominid family tree): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WD9AYN7JnFM. After discussing this film, we watched "Why are we the only humans left?":https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbHj-Q1FTj8.
Arianna and I worked on decimal place value with regrouping and writing decimals as fractions. Then, we continued to multiply 2-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers using the common method. Arianna and I talked about following the steps needed in order to correctly find the product, using known basic multiplication facts. She finished with mental math minutes and quick quizzes on graph types and modeling 3-digit numbers.
Arianna began Unit 4 – “The Middle West”, Chapter 8 – “Great Lake States”-, Lesson 1 – “The Old Northwest”- The chapter discusses the sequence of events in exploring and the expansion of this region. Arianna watched a “BrainPOP “lesson on the French and Indian War and completed the quiz at the end of the lesson. She also learned about what life was like growing up on the prairie. She visited and explored the “Ducksters Educational Site; Westward Expansion - Daily Life on the Frontier” and “American History Western Expansion Activities and Games” web site to learn about the difficult life they had.
Today we discussed the ancient site of Stonehenge, found in the UK. Arianna was not familiar with this heritage site, so we began the session with a background information video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APaIPPKFM-U
and then continued the discussion with a more recent research finding: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igX3XWeWYpg: that Stonehenge may be a large ceremonial gravesite. This lesson integrates archaeology, anthropology, and geography.
Arianna began her time on Khan Academy finding and writing decimals depicted on number lines to the hundredths place. Then, she took the quiz on how to relate decimals and fractions in words, decimals to the tenths and hundredths on number lines, and decimals in words. Next, we reviewed whole number fractions before Arianna looked at figures and determined how many equal parts they were divided into and the total number of parts, making improper fractions and using division to make mixed numbers.
After reviewing a few more book selections, Arianna chose "City of Embers" as her next read. We learned much about the science fiction setting of the story and the two main characters in the introduction and chapter 1. Arianna predicted that we have already met the hero of the story. She practiced using context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words in the story and on IXL.
This morning we completed a vocabulary review of terms from the Stone Age lesson that we began last week. Arianna completed a word search activity and we discussed the terms. One place that she was not familiar with yet was Stonehenge, so we learned more about this unique site together. The discussion of Stonehenge led to a short discussion of historic sites that we have both visited.
