Hunter and I discussed irony relative to a quote by Death, the narrator, from "The Book Thief." We read together from the book and discussed the events. The war is ending, Molching is being bombed, and Leisel has seen Max marching through the streets on his way to a concentration camp.
Roots and Radical Expressions, Multiplying and Dividing Radical Expressions
Lesson Outline
Hunter finished working on radical expressions where he had to find square, cube, and 4th roots. He has it down now, and is ready to move onto multiplying and dividing radical expressions. I started examples on that topic.
Hunter is watching the movie Marshall, which is about the first African American Supreme Court justice, Thurgood Marshall. Hunter will understand how historical figures and ordinary people helped to shape our community, state, and nation.
Hunter is completing the lesson about the Schenck v. United States Supreme Court case, concerning enforcement of the Espionage Act of 1917 during World War I. Short video followed.
We moved back to the Algebra 2 book today. I taught Hunter about principal roots. We also looked at cube roots of negative numbers. Hunter learned that we can't take an even root of a negative number. He started p.372 (13-28, 39-54)
Hunter finished his exercises on radicals on p. 623. As he continues to practice with the exponents and radicals, he is getting better with all of it.

Lesson Comments
We didn't get much math done at all today. Hunter was in the mood to TALK! He started sharing all about his life, details of his mom and dad, things that happened at the Crossroads school. He seriously talked for over an hour. It seemed appropriate for me to listen, and to not interrupt him and try to steer towards a math lesson.
Hunter did grammar practice with Khan Academy video and practice tests. We learned about irony - situational, dramatic and verbal, sarcasm and puns. We discussed expectation versus result and how it applied to "The Book Thief." We discussed and watched lessons to tackle confusing words - their, there and they're, than and then, affect and effect. Afterwards, we read "The Book Thief" together.
I gave Hunter a notebook today to keep notes of our classwork and of our class discussions. I will instruct Hunter what to write in the notebook. While I have not yet drafted any tests for Hunter, I let him know that I would try to use an open notebook policy for some of the tests and that the notebook would be of great assistance in completing the course.
We continued reviewing imagery in the opening passage of Steinbeck's The Pearl. Hunter identified descriptive adjectives and images and then in the notebook wrote down the noun described, the descriptive phrases and adjective, and the type of imagery-sound or sight. Next, we will work on his writing a descriptive paragraph of a place in Costa Rica that he has visited.
Assignment
