Hunter did the final edit of his essay on Colin Kaepernick. Afterwards, we continued to explore and compare different kinds of essays in the literature textbook by reading both "I am a Native of North America" by Chief Dan George and a reflective essay "All Together Now" by Barbara Jordan. Hunter and I discussed the author's main point and he completed some exercises to build vocabulary, learning new words he encountered in the reading, using them in crosswod puzzles and sentences, and finding antonyms. He used words with the root -mort. He should continue reading "The Book Thief" over the weekend. Happy 18th!
Hunter and I lookd again at vocabulary from "The Book Thief" through page 81. He has encountered some of these words already. We analyzed Part One - The Gravedigger's Handbook. Hunter answered some questions for discussion and we discussed the author's use of figurative language and themes throughout the book. I gave Hunter a writing assignment to choose a quote from each of the nine parts of the book and explain why it stood out to him and how the author used figurative language in that quote. We discussed the descriptions and character of Hans and Rosa Hubermann, Hans' "escape" from Death, the significance of the accordion, and the influence of Nazi Germany sourrounding them.
This morning we had a very productive discussion where we finalized the selection of our stocks for our stock portfolio. We discussed diversification and having stocks from companies representing different industries. We selected Amazon, Ford Motor Company, Tesla, Intrexon and Aquabounty. We examined Aquabounty in greater detail and discovered that this company has revolutionized genetically modified salmon and has recently won approval to begin harvesting salmon in Canada. We discussed the implications of this development and looked at the per share stock price and whether or not it was a good buy at this current time. Homework: Hunter will identify those expenses that he will incur when he lives independently. We will use this information to construct an income statement and prepare a monthly budget.
Today Hunter takes a field trip to the local Home Depot. The main intend was to focus in on building supplies and materials that would be related to Hunter dream home plans. Of main interest would be lumber, plumbing, electrical, and tools of the trades. Although we covered only half of the store, this was a worthwhile expedition. Hunter was very engaged, sharing some of his own experiences and asking related questions.
Hunter worked on his essay in class today. He typed from notes he took over the last week which were on his cellphone. We read 3 news articles together to gain more information and ideas to supplement the essay, two from the New York Times and one from the Editor of the editorial page of the Palm Beach Post. We also discussed recent news and quotes to comment on and respond to.
Linear programming is when you have an objective function under a system of constraints. We graphed the constraints, then found the vertices that bound the system. Each vertex can then be plugged into the objective function and simplified to find the maximum of minimum value of the objective function. Hunter worked on problems p. 142 (1-9)
We then moved onto Chapter 4. Section 4-1 is an introduction to matrices, where Hunter learned that matrices are identified by their size (row x column). Elements of a matrix are identified by a subscript (row, column). Hunter did exercises p. 170 (1-11, 20-25) p. 173 (30, 31)
Hunter was first shown a construction worker's nail belt and all the tools that it can hold. Next we took a look at the top 12 screw guns on the market and their pros and cons. Lastly, we viewed a video on construction steel riggers and what their main duties are on the job. Great session.
Hunter finished his assessment on sections 3-1 to 3-3. It involved solving systems of equations by graphing, by substitution, and by elimination. He also solved 2 systems of inequalities by graphing. I gave him some hints as he worked through the problems. He made a 95% on it!!!!
This morning we began our examination of the 2016 annual report for McDonald's. One of the segments of this large document described changes in business operations and adjustment made in response to changes in the marketplace. We discussed how McDonald's recognizes revenues and that there are over 13,400 McDonald's franchises in the US which are not necessarily owned by McDonald's corporation but the company receives a franchise fee along with merchandising revenues. We took a look at a recent article in the NY Times that described how New York was now requiring all restaurants to discontinue the use of frying or cooking oils that contain trans fats. McDonalds has yet to comply with this law. Homework is to continue working on worksheet featuring questions about the annual report.
