Lesson Comments
Although Hunter is suffering from a massive head cold, he did participate in following the story with both of us taking turns with the reading aloud.
Writing an Equation of a Line when given a point and a line that is perpendicular or parallel
Lesson Outline
I was proud of Hunter for calling the school to tell us that he was running late b/c he had to get gas, and proud of him for coming to school when he feels so lousy! He did his homework, and we went over it. We moved onto a harder topic. We talked about parallel, perpendicular, horizontal, and vertical lines and their slopes. We then wrote equations of lines that were perpendicular to a given line when given a point on that line. Hunter understood the steps. I did not assign homework. We will continue the topic on Monday. I hope he feels better after the weekend!
Cont.
The film addresses these concepts: Incentives are the cornerstone of modern life. The conventional wisdom is often wrong. Dramatic effects often have distant, even subtle, causes. “Experts”—from criminologists to real-estate agents—use their informational advantage to serve their own agenda. Knowing what to measure and how to measure it makes a complicated world much less so.
Hunter also completed an hour of community service work.
We started by setting up Hunter's math folder, with sections for notes, homework, quizzes, and tests. We reviewed how to graph a line from y=mx+b, and Hunter remembered well! I taught him how to write an equation of a line given 2 points. He worked several problems successfully. We then worked on finding the slope of a line when given a line in standard form. Hunter got those problems into slope-intercept form by solving for y. I gave him 1 homework problem, and a bonus problem for extra credit.
Assignment
In notebook, write in point-slope form the equation of the line through a pair of points.
