Hunter continues his dream home planning by laying out in scale the other two bedrooms, living room, and dining room. With each of these rooms he was also required to measure them out full-size here at school to get some idea if the desired furniture will fit in each room. For example, in planning the dining room size, Hunter plans on a table that would seat maximum 10 people. He uses the Batt School dining area as a model and makes adjustments as required. Good session.
The film addresses these concepts:
Incentives are the cornerstone of modern life.
The conventional wisdom is often wrong.
Dramatic effects often have distant, even subtle, causes.
“Experts”—from criminologists to real-estate agents—use their informational advantage to serve their own agenda.
Knowing what to measure and how to measure it makes a complicated world much less so.
Continue Graphing Lines from an Equation in Slope-Intercept Form
Lesson Outline
While he seemed to understand the concepts yesterday, he had difficulty remembering how to graph the line given the form y=mx+b today. Therefore, I retaught the lesson. I then started teaching how to write and equation of a line given 2 points.
On Monday, I intend to help him get his notebook organized, as well as move forward with the next concept.
Hunter was absent today. He attended football practice with Lance's permission. He will prepare notecards outlining essay on his chosen topic - Colin Kapernick, too old to drive, or Russia investigation.
We plunged into Chapter One of "Master and Commander" in which Captain Aubrey meets Dr. Maturin and is ordered to command HMS Sophie, a sloop of war. Hunter and I took turns with the reading. We had several breaks during which I explained the arcane naval terminology (e.g., "Broadside," how a Lieutenant, R.N. can be a Captain, et.al.) as well as archaic English from the early 1800's.

Lesson Comments
Hunter seems to be following the story well. I'm hopeful that, as he becomes accustomed to the terminology, that our progress will be faster.
Today we discussed the concept of interest (earning and paying), which Hunter grasped quickly, and went on to discuss Return on Investment (ROI). We started with basic exercises from Moneyinstructor.com and moved on to more complex ones from University of GA.
http://jwilson.coe.uga.edu/EMAT6450/Class%20Projects/Major/Teacher%27s%20Guide%20ROI.pdf By the end of the class, Hunter was able to calculate positive ROI, negative ROI, and which of several car purchases would provide a positive return in the shortest amount of time.
Hunter begins a unit on planning of a future dream home. The architectural scale is used to examine the future Batt Learning Center architecture blueprint. He is able to see the size and door location of his new room. Next Hunter determines the size of his future dream bedroom. By drawing on graph paper the scale size (1/4"= 1'-0") of the furniture in his bedroom he is able to determine the overall size of his bedroom to be 12'x 16'. Lastly, he determines the size of his other three bedrooms to be 12'x12'. Great session.
Today was my first day with Hunter. We reviewed Section 2-2, Linear Equations, p.62-70. Hunter graphed lines using Slope Intercept Form, found the slope of a line given 2 points, and manipulated equations to get them into slope-intercept form. I gave him 5 problems for homework. He did a good job with integer operations.
