Hunter did a great job today reviewing the concepts that we have been covering the past week. He is able to graph a line from point-slope form of an equation. He can find the slope between 2 points using the slope formula. He can write an equation in point-slope form given a point and a slope. Tomorrow he will have a quiz on these topics.
We are reading and discussing chapter 2 of Naked Economics. Examples are used in the book to show that when a material thing brings in profit, that is all right but when they no longer serve their purpose, then they are dispensable. This has everything to do with maximizing the value of a scarce resource.
1. We took some time to discuss community service options. I told him that he could assist me on weekends at my booth at green markets. Although I am not a non-profit, I do give proceeds back to local pet shelters. I told him to think about it.
2. We finished the movie Freakonomics.
3. Hunter had to complete an in class writing assignment based on what he learned from the movie.
Hunter reviewed vocabulary in preparation for a Quiz. We reviewed all parts of speech to tackle "Brain Challenge" portion of Grammar Workbook. We reviewed nouns, verbs, adverbs, interjections, adverbs, and learned anew prepositions and FANBOYS - conjunctions. Hunter will begin writing from notecards for homework, beginning essay about protest started by Colin Kapernick. We read together Mark Twain's satire "Advice to Youth". We did not finish. Hunter answered thought questions after each section,
Hunter continues his "Dream Home" design by laying out on 1/4" square graph paper his kitchen, laundry room, and garage to add to his previously scaled rooms. Next, on a large piece of 1/4" graph paper, he begins to arrange all the rooms to promote the best traffic patterns, and the most efficient use of space. Using an average cost of $150/ sq. ft., Hunter's home would cost out at slightly over $600,000. Good session.
Chords in the key of G, melodies in the G major scale.
Lesson Outline
Continue practicing chords in the key of G: G major, C Major, D major, and E minor.
Begin applying notes from the G major scale to simple melodies: twinkle twinkle little star.
Hunter did a very good job, and was able to get a pretty good tone from his chords and his fretted single notes. He will need to get a guitar for at home practice.
Assignment
practice all chords, and the melody to twinkle twinkle little star.
Today we looked at points and equations of lines. I asked Hunter to write equations of lines that went through a given point, and were either parallel or perpendicular to another line whose equation was given. He had to figure the slope of the line, then write an equation given the slope and the point. Hunter also graphed lines given equations in slope-intercept form, or standard form. If it's in standard form, he had to get it in slope-intercept form. He understood how to do this.
We did p. 68 (38-41, 43,44, 46)
Assignment
1 homework problem, graph a line given an equation in standard form
Viewing the video, A,B,C, of hand tools, the student viewed the proper use and care of various tools used in his industrial arts classes. These included, hammer, screwdriver, pliers, wrenches, and chisels.
Cont.
Through forceful storytelling and wry insight, the film shows that, economics is, at root, the study of incentives—how people get what they want, or need, especially when other people want or need the same thing. In Freakonomics, they explore the hidden side of … well, everything.
What unites all these stories is a belief that the modern world, despite a great deal of complexity and downright deceit, is not impenetrable, is not unknowable, and—if the right questions are asked—is even more intriguing than we think. All it takes is a new way of looking at things.
