"Master and Commander-The Far Side of the World," the film
Lesson Outline
We watched the part of the film that traced HMS Surprise as she followed the French ship Acheron around Cape Horn where Surprise lost a sailor overboard in vicious weather and headed north toward the Galapagos.
Supply and demand is perhaps one of the most fundamental concepts of economics and it is the backbone of a market economy.
Upon completion of this lesson, Hunter will be able to:
define 'supply and demand',
outline key principles of the laws of supply and demand,
analyze examples of supply and demand in terms of consumer goods, and
understand how the market economy works.
Hunter made new vocabulary cards for five new words this week - disposition, callow, callous, impervious, and overzealous. We discussed FANBOYS - conjunctions or connectors to clauses and their use on the SAT. Hunter practiced vocabulary practice from Prentice Hall workbook with prefixes for "not" and completed sentences using these newly-formed words. I gave him a quick spelling challenge with words from the Master Spelling workbook.
Hunter makes a second cut of his peg game using "C" Clamps and cross cut saw. He then experiments with several files in order to get saw marks removed. Lastly, he uses the following progression of sandpaper grits to finish the smoothing process; 60, 100, and 220. Excellent session.
Today I Retaught sections 1.1-1.3 due to a low score on yesterday's assessment. Then we worked on solving and graphing inequalities.Hunter seemed to remember the concept from Algebra 1.

I'm trying to make it as easy as possible for Hunter by providing a calculator, letting him use his notes and giving partial credit for incorrect solutions. However he does not seem to be putting time into studying or reviewing concepts.
Today Hunter took a 100 point assessment on concepts from the first half of chapter 1. Concepts included solving equations, combining like terms and solving literal equations for a given variable.

Hunter scored a 58% on the quiz. I will re-teach and move on. I'm a little concerned because the concepts were a review of basic Algebra 1.

We began watching "Master and Commander. The Far Side of the World." Explained the meaning of "HMS" (His/Her Majesty's Ship'), weevils in Royal Navy Hardtack (bread-the lesser of two weevils) and RN sailors forelock tugging, as a precursor to today's salute.

Hunter seemed to stay very much on top of the story.
Hunter continues work on his triangular peg game. He decides to cut the wood into a triangle shape. He then does a masterful job of filing and sanding the grain of this recent cut. The tape measure is given a second look. Hunter measures several things, including his height. (5-ll 3/4" rounded to 6' even. A good session.
