Hunter cuts a piece of sugar pine to the proper length. Using a paper pattern he carefully locates the location of the 15 holes for the golf tees. Next he drills to proper depth the holes and smooths all surfaces with a single cut file and sandpaper. Hunter tries a couple of games for for a trial run. Great session!
Today we reviewed vocabulary words. Hunter used them in sentences. He recognized parts of speech and correctly used adverbs. We reviewed grammar usage from Monday - singular and plural possessive nouns. We looked at a Cartoon Vocabulary book and page on "hospitable hospital". We read the prologue from Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. Hunter annotated the text and we discussed the central theme. We looked at Chapter 1 in the grammar book - the eight parts of speech and began reviewing different kinds of nouns.
We worked on solving equations and literal equations.
Lesson Outline
Today we worked on solving equations and literal equations.Hunter seemed to need a thorough explanation of the concepts. I'm sure it has been a while since he had Algebra 1.
Hunter is introduced to a "Student Session Log Notebook", where he keeps track in writing of areas covered daily. In doing this, we were able to review yesterday's activities. Next the power hand drill is demonstrated. Hunter already is familiar with how to install and remove drill bits. How to select proper drill bits for the shank and threads of a wood screw were shown. He correctly attaches them to pieces of wood using a 1 1/2" wood screw. Review of measuring to the nearest 1/8" of an inch. Hunter then measures the table thickness, width, and length with very little assistance. Good Session.
Hunter and I discussed the course of study and plan for English IV this year. We made four new vocabulary cards. The first five new words were - fetch, baleful, lumber, winsome and mulct. I asked Hunter to answer some grammar quiz questions appropriate for 12th grade to gauge where he is. He did a great job. He seems to recall rules of grammar and punctuation. We put these skills to work by finishing sentences on the white board and using apostrophes with singular and plural possessive nouns. I created a homework folder for him and introduced the textbook and workbook we will be using this year.
The question, "What is Industrial Arts," is explained to Hunter. The safe use of the following hand tools are demonstrated; combination square, "C" clamp, miter box, and back saw. These tools are now used to manufacture two dice. Lastly, sanding is done using proper sandpaper. Great session.
