Hunter began the session with an oral review of vowel-consonant-e and closed syllable words. He did a great job on spelling the words from step 4. Step 5, open syllables was introduced. Today, Hunter took his vocabulary chapter 2 test, earning a 75%. This particular word list was a bit challenging to him. We also reviewed pronoun types: indefinite, relative, personal, reflexive, intensive, etc. We read from "Rosa Parks: My Story."

We began in the textbook where we explored the relations between Imperial Rome and the Jewish people. We read about the tensions between the Israelites and their Roman overlords, including the story of Masada, the sacking of Jerusalem and the Diaspora of the Jewish people. Then we went on line to explore the emergence of Christianity in Rome, culminating with the Emperor Constantine.

Lesson Outline
We used the textbook to explore how Romans lived their daily lives, what their homes were like and what their social lives were like. We learned that much of what we know about life in Rome was gleaned from excavation of Pompeii, buried in Volcanic ash from the 79 A.D. eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Finally, we went to the lab and did an in-depth exploration of Pompeii on line.

Today, Hunter took his Unit 2 Vocabulary test and scored a 70%. We reviewed personal, interrogative, reflexive, intensive, demonstrative, relative, and indefinite pronouns, and he completed some review exercises. We read "My Story: Rosa Parks" and "There is a Longing" by Chief Dan George, answering analysis questions at the conclusion of our session.

We read from the text the section on Pax Romana which lasted from the Emperor (Caesar) Augustus through the reign of Marcus Aurelius, a span of some 200 years. We explored how Roman culture--arts, history, literature, theater and Roman patriotism flourished during the period. We also explored the cross fertilization of Roman culture with that of the Greeks and the Etruscans.
