Gracyn worked on her recognition of the names of the notes according to the "lines" and "spaces" on the staff. She also reviewed her names of the notes on a C major scale.
Gracyn and I read and discussed the next two chapters in our Junie B. Jones book. She was able to make connections to the text and notice nonsensical events. She read a folktale about a snake and frog, locating details about chartacter, setting and events. She was also able to find evidence to support her answers. We began a short summary of the folktale.
In this lesson, Gracyn listened to Make Way for Ducklings. She will be on the lookout for nature in the big city now! In addition, she completed an Earth Day genre word ladder.
This morning Gracyn and I reviewed the Magic Tree House book, The Knight at Dawn, by Mary Pope Osborne. We began this book back in January, so reviewed chapters 1-3. We discussed and analyzed events in the story as well as the characters’ actions in order to understand them more deeply. Gracyn also responded to comprehension follow up questions for each chapter and impressed me with recall of several items from when we read it before.
Gracyn read through a variety of word problems focusing on the vocabulary to determine if addition or subtraction was necessary. Once determined, she wrote a number sentence to show the problem using a question mark for the missing number. A bar model was used to determine which information was given and which needed to be found. Finally, Gracyn solved the problems and filled in the missing addend.
Gracyn continued her unit on plant and animal needs today. She read the lesson in her science book on what animals need to stay healthy and survive. We discussed her pets and what they need to survive and what she and her family do to take care of them. We talked about what humans needs to stay healthy and she concluded that they have the same needs as animals food, water, shelter, air and space.
Gracyn practiced gymnastics moves usually completed in gymnastics class. She practiced handstands on the wall and held them for twenty seconds. Gracyn watched gymnastics videos and we talked about the moves and compared the girls' skills.
