Gracyn worked on something special for Mother's Day. She used a variety of colors and special paper that she brought with her from school. Then, she began to make a multi-colored weaved paper fish. She cut strips from different colors of paper which she weaved in and out of slits cut into a fish shaped piece of paper.
Gracyn listened to the composer "Chopin" today. We talked about his style of concertos for piano. The name of the concerto was, Nocturne Op. 9 No.2. She also listened to the theme from "Beauty and the Beast."
Today Gracyn practiced the movements that she did last week (flow of gymnastic moves). After her practice we decided to put several of the moves to music. Gracyn picked two songs and choreographed the movements to the songs. She incorporated back bends, hand stands, round-ups, forward rolls, pull-ups and creative body movements in her performance. Gracyn did an amazing job today!
We continued our discussion of 'Just Grace' with Gracyn reading a paragraph on her own. She read a Raz nonfiction story at level J with fluency and comprehension. We worked on synonyms and their nuanced meanings. Gracyn identified correctly spelled words from sets of three.
We continued reading and discussing our Just Grace story. Gracyn read a level K book on Raz, really good job with using context to determine unknowns. She also read a passage and located details supporting the main idea. We compared and contrasted events in two stories.
Gracyn completed the 2-digit subtraction assessment. This covered vocabulary fill in the blank, using the number line to break apart the number being subtracted, drawing a quick picture to find the difference, and word problems. She understands the concepts and answered the questions with minimal assistance. We will move on to the next unit tomorrow.
Today we wrote two stories on the scholastic website. The 1st one was about a funny troll who had three mean brothers and it also involved a wishing well. The second one was about a pink banana named Banana Split and how much it loved the color pink, for this particular story we added a drawing too.
Today we read chapter 6, "Ta-da" in our Magic Tree House book. Annie and Jack realize they have been captured by three huge men. Annie kicks and screams her way to the dungeon as the men just laugh at her. She then shines the flashlight in their eyes, which frightens them as they've never seen this technology! Gracyn and I discussed the words squinty and where a mustache would be found on a person. We analyzed why the men would be afraid of a flashlight. Gracyn did an excellent job with the recall of this chapter, however needed some direction in formulating complete written sentences for the response questions. To end our session, we completed the Earth Day themed activity we began last week. I read statements to her about the Earth and she used the bold words in the sentence to form a contraction. We then practiced with additional examples. She is having some difficulties with remembering which letters to use from the second word. We will continue to practice contractions.
Gracyn continued her lesson today on sea turtles. We reviewed the facts about sea turtles she learned last week and read a nonfiction book in Raz Kids called "Sea Turtles." She answered comprehension questions as we read the book. She also answered written questions on facts that she learned after the book.
