Today Gracyn made mini chocolate chip banana nut muffins. We talked about why we use bananas that have turned brown. Gracyn mashed up the bananas. Then she went on to measure all the ingredients and mix everything together. We baked the mini muffins for 14 minutes. They turned out fabulously!
balance game (right left brain); core strengthening; "Good Night Yoga" book and poses
Lesson Outline
Our balance game incorporated right/left brain switches with balance (feet, hands, knees, alternating on the mat). We read through "Good Night Yoga" and did breathing exercises along with poses. We continued with core strengthening exercises.
Gracyn continued the lesson on gravity today. We read a lesson on gravity in her science book and answered questions about the reading. She also watched a Magic School Bus episode about gravity to reinforce the lesson.
Today, Gracyn worked on lessons 6.4 and 6.5. These both continued yesterday's lesson of understanding place value. Gracyn grouped ones together to make tens. Then, drew the tens and counted by tens up to 100. We also spent time doing addition flash cards on the ipad. Each session has 25 timed addition or subtraction facts, which should help Gracyn with her speed and fluency. Finally, Gracyn correctly completed the questions on the Chapter 6 mid-point checkpoint and practiced writing the number words 1-10.
Gracyn warmed up with a word wall review and then we read 'Arthur Lost and Found' for read aloud. Our focus was making connections. She read 'The Nice Little House' for her independent reading and did an excellent job. Our word work today was cvce words and we read 'The Joke" to practice with those words. We made a list of words to describe a pretzel and plan to write that description tomorrow, focusing on elaborating in her writing.
Today Gracyn played "The Knuckle Song" and we practiced it using the "penny game". We then went over the first phrase of "Mary Had a Little Lamb" on the black keys and discussed the term "phrase". Gracyn also learned to locate middle C and all of the C-D-E groups on the piano keyboard. She demonstrated an excellent grasp of today's subject matter.
Gracyn finished her map today, using the elements we discussed and some of her own ideas - sea serpents to make the oceans look dangerous, a caravel, a compass, etc. We reviewed our topic of community helpers and she created a police officer's hat and badge from the printed artwork relative to that lesson. We read in Studies Weekly about rules, citizenship, responsibility and Florida. We read one of her library books "Duck for President", which was a great example of all of the ideas we discussed put in action - voting, election, rules, responsibilities/chores. She wore a "I voted today" pin that she made during our class and understands voting and its importance. We read about the U.S. flag, old and new, and Betsy Ross and George Washington. She completed a map compass worksheet and some reading comprehension questions about the U.S. flag.
This morning, Gracyn completed lesson 6.3, understanding the place value of tens and ones. We covered the concept that we can use different ways to write a number as tens and ones. For example, 19 is a two-digit number, the 1 in 19 means 1 ten and the 9 in 19 means 9 ones. The number 19 can also be thought of as 10 ones and 9 ones or 1 ten and 9 ones. Gracyn then practiced writing the number words 1-10 which we will continue up to 120. To correlate with number words, we played Under the Sea Numbers 1-120. In this game, number cards were spread out face down. We took turns picking a card and trying to match the number with the number word on the board. Gracyn was very good at sounding out the higher number words which are not familiar to her.
Today was library day so we returned and checked out books for the week. We read 'D.W. is a Picky Eater' as our read aloud and 'What We do' was her independent read. Our strategy focus was identifying unknown words using context clues. Our word work focus was the silent e rule and we practiced her sight words. She completed her family book today!
