Gracyn had a fun Friday activity called color, sort, and add. She opened a package of Skittles and counted how many of each of the colors she had. Then, we made addition sentences by adding different combinations of colors together. Gracyn had a lot of fun with this worksheet and with eating the Skittles. Next, she enjoyed connecting the numbers and coloring a princess dot-to-dot worksheet using the numbers 1-100. We finished with the book Add it Up.

Science:
Parts of a plant -
Gracyn and I worked together on a workbook, called parts of the plant. We talked about what a plant needs to grow, including Carbon dioxide. Gracyn was able to complete a word scramble of the parts of a flower. We then examined the seed collection, marveling at the different sizes and shapes of seeds and seed cases. We dissected a bean, to see what was inside. We then placed a variety of seeds in a plastic bag (including beans, peas, and ‘mystery’ seeds). We added paper towels and water, and taped the bag to a window. We will watch what happens to our seeds over the next few weeks.
Gracyn worked on lesson 6.1 and 6.2 today. Counting forward by 10's was one concept covered. Gracyn had to write and say the numbers as she counted by 10's from different starting points. The hundreds chart was used as a visual aid. Gracyn also solved a few counting by 10's riddles. For example, you say me when you start on 21 and count by tens. I am after 91. I am before 111. What number am I? She enjoyed the challenge of these problems. We also practiced writing and saying the numbers 100-120 which are new to her and still a little challenging.
Gracyn read the story 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf' from Raz-Kids for her independent reading today. We read 'Arthur's Eyes' together and 'Katie Woo is a Bossy Pants' for read aloud. Again, we made contrasts and comparisons with Junie B. Jones. We created a word wall with sight words for her to use in her writing (and reading). She completed her page for Reed in her family book.
We began by reviewing the portion of "The Knuckle Song" that Gracyn learned last lesson. After this, we went over the remainder of the song, which Gracyn picked up well. We also discussed the intervals of steps and skips, the damper pedal, and half notes. We then played through "Two Black Cats" and "The Marching Song," and discussed keeping a steady beat, while counting two beats for each half note. We ended our lesson by playing a duet of "The Knuckle Song."
Graycn began a new lesson on the sun today. We discussed why the sun is important to life on Earth. We read the lesson in the book and did the activities at the end of the lesson. We also discussed how the sun can be harmful and ways to protect yourself from the sun.
I am so glad she's back! Our read aloud was chapter one of an American Girl story, 'Grace". We read 'Katie Woo and the Big Lie' together, making comparisons/contrasts to Junie B. Jones. She read 'Goats' as her independent reading. Our word work focus was learning the glued sounds -ing-ang-ong-ung-ink-ank-onk-unk. We also practiced sight words.
Gracyn came back to school excited, refreshed, and ready to work. She took the Chapter 2 test which she scored 100%. We are now moving on to Chapter 6, Counting and Modeling the numbers 0-120. Gracyn and I worked on the review worksheets to better understand which concepts need the most focus. Finally, we played a game together called Going Fishing Tens and Ones. We each had to take turns rolling 2 dice, adding them up, and moving that amount of spaces. The space gave a clue such as, 9 tens-4 ones. Gracyn would have to find a fish with the number 94 and cover it with a counter. We used tally marks to keep track how many fish we each had. It was a fun game that Gracyn enjoyed winning.
