PJ has been asking for a long time to recreate a dish from one of his favorite TV shows. After cooperating for several weeks by making "real food," I thought PJ deserved to satisfy his curiosity. We did some research online and found a recipe that looked good and went about making several Fried Orbs, which were essentially fried balls of mozzarella cheese. It turned out to be a lot of fun and it was a great way to talk about, and get some practice with, the basic breading station, as well as safety around hot oil.
We were unable to do cooking, so we worked on Writing.
Lesson Outline
Libby listened to me read from the daily Scholastic Reader. Then, we worked on the sheet for daily information (day, day of the week, etc.). Next, our focus was on the /h/ sound. Slowly, Libby was able to determine if a word started with the /h/ sound. Finally, she was able to identify the /h/ sound, the words themselves, and circle the words with the /h/ sound.

Pan Seared Steak with Aromatic Rice and Homemade Chimichurri
Lesson Outline
Prepare a fresh chimichurri sauce, practicing knife skills and discussing methods of breaking down herbs and produce, while balancing flavors and textures within the sauce. Build flavor in the rice with an aromatic base and sear the steak, finishing it by butter basting with garlic.

Richard did a great job practicing his knife skills and balancing the flavors within the chimichurri sauce! He was very excited to cook the steak, but demonstrated great patience by preparing the other ingredients while the steak tempered on the counter. He seemed to have a lot of fun putting this meal together and enjoyed discussing the various ingredients and techniques used to layer the flavors.

Libby did a great job! She had a bit more patience when it came to mixing the batter and really enjoyed the process of exploring the different toppings and deciding what would go well together in a pancake. She also took custom orders from a couple of teachers, preparing pancakes to their specifications, and showed a great attention to detail while doing so. As the final pancake she made herself a half chocolate chip half blueberry pancake that she enjoyed very much.

Teddy did a great job! He was a little bored with the process of measuring and mixing the batter, wanting to get right to the good part, but he did a good job remaining focused. Once we got cooking he was excited to try every flavor combination he could think of and had a great time mixing and matching the toppings.
