Rory and I tackled one last section in the English Grammar and Writing. We actually chose to do an SAT version today, which was a bit more challenging, but very helpful in the skills that Rory needs to practice. It has been a pleasure working with Rory. I will email you with tips for her counselor that will be coaching her for the rest of the time before the test.
Intersecting graphs, foiling and factoring, area, and scatter plots
Lesson Outline
Rory and I worked on various SAT problems involving factoring expressions, foiling binomials, interpreting scatter plots, and systems of equations. I encouraged her to do a problem building a formula from data and she was able to get the answer. Rory showed that she has a good ability to make educated guesses.

I want to build Rory's confidence and also her skill set so that she can improve her score when she takes the test.
Review of math problems using study guide problems
Lesson Outline
Rory and I continued to work on problems in the study guide. We solved some problems isolating variables in formulas, solving systems of equations, setting up mixture problems, interpreting graphs, and developing formulas from complex instructions. I reminded her that even if a problem appears to require a specialized knowledge outside of math, the SAT math test does not test actual science knowledge. I helped Rory to decide when to skip problems to come back to them later. I also helped her recognize right multiple choice answers without doing complex mathematics. There was no assignment.

Rory is putting forth a lot of effort but she has a weak math background and is going to have difficulty when she takes the test.
Rory and I have tackled the entire 2018 ACT book. We went back to previous years and did the sections that are new. She is getting stronger as we speak. The biggest skill to work on for Rory is comma, semi-colon, period, and colon usage. We have reviewed these rules. We will continue on Tuesday, her last session.
Graph interpretation, isolating variables, solving systems of equations
Lesson Outline
I worked with Rory on problems with and without calculators, fill in the blanks and multiple choice. There were problems where a variable had to be isolated in a formula, where a formula had to be solved to find the volume of a cylinder, and where graphs had to be interpreted to find a certain value. There was no assignment.

Lesson Comments
Rory is very proactive about practicing SAT problems. She gives a lot of effort to understanding the problems and wants to try to solve as many problems as possible.
Today, Rory and I went through another entire English test portion. We focused on comma usage, the "stop and go" philosophy of punctuation, transitions, phrases and clauses, and dependent vs. independent clauses. Rory is a great learner. She remembers concepts that we have reviewed previously and gets those answers correct on the next test that we do. We are still working on the above skills but each session, Rory gets stronger and stronger.
I led Rory through various problems including systems of equations, word problems, table interpretation, function identification, and similar triangles. I helped Rory recognize very difficult problems which I recommended skipping. I also went over strategies such as substituting every multiple choice answer into the questions. There was no assignment.

Rory is showing initiative by trying a lot of problems which she hasn't been taught.
I guided Rory through solutions of SAT math problems including chart interpretation, percents, solving equations for individual variables, similar geometric figures, and math logic problems. There was no assignment.

Rory is working very hard studying for the test but she has a lot of gaps in her math ability.
Rory and I completed an entire English section of the test. We went straight through so that we could see how she did concentration and focus-wise. Next week, we will practice some skills: subject/pronoun agreement, verb-tense consistency, types of sentences and comma usage.
I worked with Rory on SAT math problems using a current study guide.
We did various multiple choice problems covering topics such as algebraic manipulation of formulas. We also did word problems, function comparisons, mixture problems, and logic puzzles. I guided her to find the correct answers as well as to advise her on strategies and techniques for taking the exam. There was an assignment.

Rory has learned to work harder this year than I remembered from the last time I worked with her.
