Creative Writing
Lesson Outline
As Max indicated he was interested in using today's session as a creative writing class, we discussed various forms of creative writing: short story, fantasy, poetry, novels. I further placed on the board the concept of Freytag's pyramid in order to identify the parts of a short story. We focused on the need for a conflict, a dramatic climax, and a resolution. After discussing some story lines, Max decided he wanted to write a story about walking his dog on the beach. He spent the rest of the session working on his story. At the end of class , we looked over his draft and talked about ways to add dramatic conflict to the tale.

Lesson Comments
Max loves art. I'm trying to get him to sway away from using other people's art as reference but it is super natural to do when you're first learning. I started working on drawing the figure with him which I think will help build his confidence and allow him to create his own drawings.

Lesson 5 The Cycling of Earth’s Materials – Max learned what happens to rocks at Earth’s surface. Then he learned that sediment deposited in water often forms layers in the beds of rivers, lakes, and oceans. Over time these layers can be preserved in sedimentary rocks. Next he learned that lithification is the process through which sediment turns into rock. Then he learned that cementation is the process by which minerals dissolved in surrounding water crystallize between grains of sediment such as quartz, calcite, and clay.
Assignment: Add pictures and notes on the rock cycle to science notebook
