Macbeth
Lesson Outline
Max completed his spelling quiz on Shakespearean literary terms . We then worked on forming a paragraph about the play using all of the words such as : tragedy, iambic pentameter, protagonist, scene etc. We used this exercise to review critical aspects of the play, including Macbeth's sudden change in fortune, the peripeteia . As Max's next assignment from his London school requires an analysis of the opening scene of the play, we read and discussed the opening scene where the three witches appear ,and then watched the Kennedy Center's production of Act I (i). We noted the use of rhyme and rhythm to suggest incantations. As the school's assignment includes some preliminary work on Shakespeare, we looked at a list of Shakespeare's plays. For homework, rewrite the paragraph of literary vocabulary and read the one page biography of Shakespeare from the book.

Lesson 5 The Cycling of Earth’s Materials – Max learned the difference between rocks and minerals. Then he learned that crystallization occurs when particles dissolve in a liquid or when they melt, solidify, and form crystals. Next he learned the difference between extrusive and intrusive rock. When lava cools and crystallizes on Earth’s surface the igneous rock that forms is called extrusive. Igneous rock that forms as magma cools underground and is called intrusive rock. Next he learned how crystals are formed in rock. If rocks cool slowly underground large crystals form but if they cool quickly small crystals form. If lava cools too quickly to form crystals it is called volcanic glass.

Macbeth
Lesson Outline
Max's school in London forwarded a list of literary terms and spelling words related to Macbeth that we studied today in preparation for a quiz tomorrow on the material. On the board, I outlined the relationship between the terms: Shakespearean tragedy, protagonist, antagonist, and peripeteia. We discussed specific examples from the play and concentrated on the correct spelling of the terms.Likewise, with respect to the term "apparition", we read from the text of the play the scene where the three apparitions appear and discussed the symbolic meaning of each apparition. Last, we reviewed the term"iambic pentameter" and I explained the concept of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line.We looked at some examples of iambic pentameter in the text of the play as well as examples of "lower" class characters who speak in blank verse. For homework, study for spelling test on literary terms.

Macbeth Act V
Lesson Outline
We completed the study of this Shakespearean tragedy by first identifying those who die in the final act of the play . Max kept notes on Lady Macbeth's suicide triggered by a guilty conscience as well as Macduff's revenge killing of Macbeth who slaughtered Macduff's family. We then listed final prophesies of the witches and noted how each is realized but not in the way Macbeth anticipated. I further read aloud and explained many of the famous speeches in Act V,including Macbeth's iconic"out out brief candle " soliloquy. Max perceptively noted how bleak and fatalistic Macbeth has become since we first met him in Act I. We further viewed portions of Act V from a production put on at the Kennedy Center. From our study, Max recognized the famous speeches. Last, we reviewed the assignments on the play from Max's London school which we will begin to address tomorrow.

Science – Max observed various rock formations. Then he identified how the rocks were formed such as the type of weathering, erosion, and deposition. Next Max reviewed how sedimentary rocks form when sediment is deposited, compacted, and then cemented together. Then he reviewed how metamorphic rocks are formed from extreme heat and pressure. Next he reviewed how igneous rocks are formed from either intrusive or extrusive volcanic activity. He took a test on rock formation and identification.
