Max played a math game as a warm up for the day focusing on multi-step word problems. Max completed a common core activity to determine how to solve. At times, he will use the numbers in the paragraph and guess at how to solve. So this encouraged him to slow down, and use keywords and then apply the information provided. He was very successful towards the end of this and felt confident. He completed his last assignment on mathletics and was introduced to algebra. We worked on 3.5 in his math book.

Max played a math game focusing on multiplication, division, fractions, time, money, addition and subtraction word problems as a warm up. Max worked on addition and subtraction multistep word problem task cards with up to three steps to solve. He completed mathematics categories: multiplication, divisions, groups of 6-8,rounding to the nearest ten to solve. We accessed his spelling list on spellodrum. He recorded them in his journal and generated a paragraph using 5 words from his spelling list. He enjoyed this but found it difficult to generate ideas independently. He felt confident adding details and keeping the momentum of the story going when we brainstormed together and did a guided writing exercise to complete the paragraph. He was satisified with his work.

Max worked on multiplcation and division multistep word problem task cards with up to three steps to solve. He did excellent on these with guidance. He needs support at this point to know how to setup the problem appropriately to solve. With guidance, he was able to search for keywords as clues to support how to setup the problem. He completed mathletics categories: multiplication, division, groups of 6-8, and rounding to the nearest ten to solve. We worked on long division--Max needed some guidance with solving once he was well into the hundreds or thousands place but overall mastered the concept well.

Max completed the Mathletics program for today and worked on math facts, division facts, long division up to four-digit numbers without regrouping, multiples, related facts and groups of a given number. During a break, we set a timer and generated 10 ideas of fun things we do during Christmas time. He loved this. Following our break, we created related fact houses where I provided a given number for the door and Max determined two possible related numbers. We played Munchroom Math and practiced addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, time, money and graphing. We really focused on the comprehension portion. I would like to see Max strengthen in this area as he learns to determine what is being asked and what information he can use to help him solve the problems.

Max and I completed pages from his math workbook. He began by solving multiplication word problems. Then, multiplying with regrouping was covered. Max used his place value knowledge to multiply each place value digit, regroup the products in each place value, and then combine to find the product. Together, we played multiplication war. We each flipped over two cards, multiplied them together, and the highest product won all of the cards. Max finished his time with math games on coolmath-games.com.

Reading Comprehension/ Figurative Language
Lesson Outline
We read an article about traffic safety and discussed the main idea and key details of the text. Next, Max completed the questions. He worked on using part of the question in his response, answering in full, complete sentences. Max reread his work and checked for correct punctuation. After he completed his schoolwork, we looked at examples of idioms and hyperbole. Max continued to build reading comprehension skills by reading a poem and answering the questions. Max added an example of an idiom and hyperbole to his ocean poem.

Lesson Outline
Max read his book, Diary Of A Wimpy Kid out loud. He focused on rereading for meaning when faced with unknown words. He also would separate the word into smaller chunks to decode it. After reading a few pages, he'd retell the main events in the story. Max was also able to find some examples of figurative language. Max learned about making inferences when reading and was able to infer specific characteristics about the main character. Max also made connections to the text.
Next, Max practiced his spelling words on the white board. He studied the spelling pattern by writing the base word first, doubling the consonant and adding the suffix. He took a practice test and focused on the few words he misspelled. After practicing those words, he took his test.

Max and I worked on homework that he brought with him. This involved multiplying by 10's and 100's. Max determined how many units, tens, and hundreds were in each product and put this into charts. We also reviewed how any number multiplied by 10 or 100 is that number with either a 0 or 00 added on at the end.
